Easy Cheddar Strata with Grilled Onions

- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil shopping list
- 2 medium onions, sliced shopping list
- 8 slices New York Deli-Style rye bread shopping list
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard shopping list
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese shopping list
- 1 large tomato, seeded and coarsely chopped, about 1 cup shopping list
- 1-1/2 cups cream or whole milk shopping list
- 4 large eggs shopping list
How to make it
- Heat oven to 300°.
- Spray a square baking dish, 8x8x2, with cooking spray.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook onions in oil for about 8 minutes, stirring frequently, until golden brown.
- Remove from heat.
- Trim the crusts from the bread.
- Spread mustard on one side of each slice of bread.
- Arrange 4 slices, mustard side up, in a baking dish.
- Layer 1 cup of cheese, the tomato and the onions on the bread.
- Place remaining bread, mustard side down, on the onions.
- Beat cream or milk and the eggs until well blended.
- Pour evenly over bread.
- Bake uncovered for about 1 hour or until center is set and bread is golden brown.
- Sprinkle with remaining cheese.
- Let stand 10 minutes before cutting.
