Ingredients

  • 4 pears shopping list
  • 1 cup superfine sugar (lacking this run some granulated sugar through your food processor to make superfine, if using a blender do not let the sugar get too hot while grinding or it will melt) shopping list
  • 2 cups dechlorinated water (to dechlorinate water let stand in an open container overnight for the chlorine to evaporate) shopping list

How to make it

  • Remove peel from the pears and keep on the side.
  • Remove stalk and core the pears
  • In a small pan over very low heat, cook the sugar until it is golden, stirring constantly (note melted sugar is extremely hot and will burn you badly be careful and don;t walk away from it, sugar goes from golden brown to burnt in a matter of seconds)
  • pour water into another pan
  • add the peels and boil for 10 minutes
  • discard the peels and gradually pour the water into the sugar mixture
  • poach the pear halves in this syrup until soft
  • serve cold but not chilled or warm w/ice cream
