Sausage Gravy
From oldgringo 16 years agoIngredients
- 1/2 lb pan sausage shopping list
- 3 tablespoons flour shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon salt shopping list
- 1/2 teaspoon fine ground black pepper shopping list
- 1-1/2 cups milk shopping list
How to make it
- As you cook, break up the sausage meat into very small pieces with the back of a fork and brown well. After frying the sausage pieces, there will be caramelized particles left stuck to the bottom of the pan along with fat drippings from the meat.
- Adjust the drippings to about 3 tablespoons of fat; reserving any juices and the fried sausage meat. If needed, add butter or bacon drippings to bring fat to about 3 tablespoons.
- Add flour and mix into the fat and mix as much as possible. Brown but do not burn the flour.
- Gradually, add any reserved juices and the milk. Using a fork or other implement, deglaze the pan and mix the ingredients.
- Add the sausage meat and seasoning, then simmer until the gravy is thickened.
- Serve with hot Buttermilk Biscuits or over grits, mashed potatoes or rice.
