French Onion Soup Modified from Sandra Lee

- 5 med - large white onions, sliced shopping list
- 5 med - large yellow onions, sliced shopping list
- 3 T chopped garlic shopping list
- 4 T worcestershire sauce shopping list
- 1 package beefy onion mushroom soup mix shopping list
- 1 carton beef broth shopping list
- 1/2 carton chicken broth shopping list
- 1/2 - 1 c water shopping list
- 1/2 stick margarine shopping list
- seasoned salt shopping list
- garlic pepper shopping list
- 3 T dried parsley shopping list
- 1 bay leaf shopping list
- 2 T cornstarch and 1/4 c water if needed to thicken shopping list
- Nice, large, seasoned croutons (homemade ffrom leftover french or itialian bread are best) shopping list
- gruyere cheese shopping list
How to make it
- Mix all ingredients except cheese, croutons, cornstarch and 1/4 c water in large stovetop pot
- Bring to Boil
- Cover, and allow to gently boil 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally
- Remove lid and simmer, allowing to reduce and thicken
- (Add beef stock, or seasoning as needed, as cooking time progresses)
- Allow to simmer until 15 minutes til serving time
- If needed at this time, mix cornstarch in 1/4 c water and pour into boiling soup
- Stir constantly until thickened slightly
- Ladle soup into individual, oven proof bowls
- Place bowls on baking sheet
- Add Croutons to each bowl
- Cover each with a slice or handful of shredded GruyereCheese
- Broil until cheese is melted
