How to make it

  • Pick over and rinse the beans.
  • Add the water and soak the beans overnight.
  • The next day, bring the beans and water to a boil.
  • Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
  • Add salt, vinegar, molasses, brown sugar, butter, nutmeg and cinnamon stick.
  • Stir to combine.
  • Simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, or until the beans are tender.
  • The liquid should be saucy. - if too runny, turn up the heat for 10 minutes or so until desired consistency is reached..
  • Remove the cinnamon stick.
  • Serve

    " It was just okay "
    eastcoaster ate it and said...
    I looked up Swedish Brown Beans, they can be replaced with regular brown beans. I used Thompson's White Pea Beans.This is close to how we make them. I some what followed the recipe,
    i added 1 med. diced onion, the rest stayed the same.
    I was a bit apprehensive as i have never used nutmeg or a cinnamon stick in stew. The beans were not ready in one hour but that is because i used a different bean, i think. Mine took close to 6 hours in a 250 degree oven, as the submitter did not add what temp. to cook them.
    It was ok but to sweet for us, i gave them to my SIL as they like sweet.
    I won't make this again, but for those who like sweet it might work

    I use to grow swedish brown beans... and loved the taste of them in the swedish baked beans. thank you for reminding me, I haven't made them in a long time
