Applesauce Cake Recipe
Another vintage recipe from Mom's Kansas Ladies Cookbook The recipe is from a Mrs. Elmore A. Bickford There isn't much for specific directions by today's standards. Yep...that old....but I'll do my best!

Ingredients
  • 1/3 C shortening
  • 1 C brown sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cloves
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 cup raisins, rehydrated and drained
  • 1 Cup warm unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 Cups flour
  • 1 C chopped nuts (optional)

Directions
  1. Cream shortening and sugar and add egg
  2. Add soda to warm applesauce
  3. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with the applesauce
  4. Beat well after each addition
  5. Add raisins and nuts
  6. Bake in moderate ( 350 ) oven for 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean
  7. Since today's ovens are way more accurate, I would start hecking on this at 30 minutes maybe

Oh wow, I think this is the way my grandmother used to make her applesauce cake (I remember her heating the applesauce in a little saucepan and adding something to it when it was hot)...how great is that?! Thanks for sharing this, Pat2!
