Award Winning Cornbread Recipe
I entered this cornbread years ago in a contest and won first place! It's so easy and delicious, I make it every time i make a batch of chili.

Ingredients
  • 1 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 cup white cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cup sour milk (to make milk sour, add 1 tbsp + 1 tsp vinegar)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup shortening (Crisco), melted

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 375
  2. Grease sides and bottom of a 9x13 pan (glass works best)
  3. Mix together all the dry ingredients in a medium bowl
  4. Prepare the sour milk in a separate bowl if necessary
  5. Add the eggs, sour milk and vanilla to the dry ingredients
  6. Finally, add the melted shortening. It will sizzle and tend to float on the top, so stir well until it's totally incorporated.
  7. Pour into the greased pan and bake 30 minutes
  8. Let cool before serving. The flavors really come out when it has cooled.
  9. Enjoy!
