Ingredients

How to make it

  • Chop the cabbage into 4 quarters, cut out the central core and shred.
  • Peel and core apple. Chop into small pieces.
  • Place all ingredients into a large pan with about 1 ¼ cups water. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer on low heat, for about 30 minutes, stirring once or twice.
  • The cabbage should be tender but not soft with little liquid left.
  • Serve hot. If making ahead, cool and chill. Reheat thoroughly to serve.

Those do sound good, but this recipe doesn't have them. There are many recipes for red cabbage and this is but one.

Cook for 30 minutes? Where's the rendered bacon? The cloves? The bay leaves? Schreckliche!

I was looking for a cabbage dish I had been served years ago...great taste. I have a maternal German background and thought this might be it. I'm sorry to say "nope" I don't think I'd like it, but I know I DON'T like caraway seeds, so that's why. I'm sorry

Yummmy! I had this while growing up. The only change that we did was to use bacon in it and bacon fat instead of butter, but other than that, this is it! I've gotta make this soon. I just hope the rest of my family gets as excited as I do.
