How to make it

  • Preheat the oven to 350°.
  • Grease and flour a high-sided 9x9" square pan.
  • Melt the butter in a large bowl and allow it to cool.
  • Beat in the sugar and the egg until well combined.
  • In anther bowl, stir together the dry ingredients.
  • In a large measuring cup, combine the liquids.
  • Add flour mixture and liquids alternately to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition, until smooth (batter will be thin).
  • Pour the batter into the pan and bake in the center of the oven.
  • Start checking the cake for doneness from 45 minutes onwards, or until cake pulls away just a bit from the sides of the pan and a toothpick test leaves no crumbs clinging to it. Do not overbake!
  • Cut into 9 squares.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream or lemon sauce and await raves.
