How to make it

  • PORRIDGE:

  • Bring water and salt to a boil.
  • Stir in the mealiemeal until crumbly.
  • Lower your stoves heat until very low.
  • Put a lid on.
  • Let it cook for about an hour, stirring occasionally.
  • TART:

  • Stir in the sweetcorn with the porridge.
  • Put a layer of the mixture into casserole dish.
  • Mix the onion, pepper, mushrooms and ground beef in a pot.
  • (You can leave the ground beef and only make the bacon especially when you will have this as a side dish)
  • Let simmer until cooked.
  • Put a layer on top of the porridge.
  • Put a layer of cheese on top.
  • Mix the soup powder with the milk.
  • Pour half over the layers.
  • Put a layer porridge mixture on top.
  • Layer all the ground beef on top of that.
  • Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over.
  • Pour the rest of the sauce over.
  • Bake at 350 deg F (180 deg C) until golden brown.

    Mealiemeal is actually finely grinded maize that you use to make crumbly, stiff or a sort of runny porridge. You can have it with only milk and sugar. I will post a photo of it. Canzi told me in the U.S. they call it cornmeal
