Make it like the picture or create your own design. Use different colors or whatever you wish. Have the children help and make their frosting.

Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2/3 cup cocoa
- 3/4 cup cooking oil
- 2 tsp. vinegar
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 2 cups cold water
Directions
- Sift the flour, sugar, salt, and cocoa into a 9 x 13-inch ungreased baking pan.
- Spread the mixture evenly in the pan, and create three small "wells" in the mixture.
- Into the first, pour the oil; into the second, pour the vinegar; and into the third, pour the vanilla.
- Pour the cold water over the entire cake and mix well with a fork. Bake at 350 degrees F (180 C) for 40 minutes. Cool on rack, then frost the cake with chocolate and vanilla frosting as in picture.

I used to make this as a kid. My mom said it was called Wacky cake and that it was a wartime recipe. Eggs were in short supply and this was a chocolate cake without eggs, basically. It's also nice and moist, thanks to the oil.
