How to make it

  • Sift the flour, sugar, salt, and cocoa into a 9 x 13-inch ungreased baking pan.
  • Spread the mixture evenly in the pan, and create three small "wells" in the mixture.
  • Into the first, pour the oil; into the second, pour the vinegar; and into the third, pour the vanilla.
  • Pour the cold water over the entire cake and mix well with a fork. Bake at 350 degrees F (180 C) for 40 minutes. Cool on rack, then frost the cake with chocolate and vanilla frosting as in picture.

    I used to make this as a kid. My mom said it was called Wacky cake and that it was a wartime recipe. Eggs were in short supply and this was a chocolate cake without eggs, basically. It's also nice and moist, thanks to the oil.
