How to make it

  • Cut chicken into serving sized pieces.
  • Put 1/4 cup flour and /4 tsp salt in plastic bag. Add the chicken and shake well, coating the chicken with flour mixture.
  • In large skillet, heat 1/4 cup shortening over medium het. Add chickn to hot oil and cook until browned on both sides. Remove chicken.
  • Add onion, garlic, and celery to skillet. Cook until soft. Return chicken to skillet. Add water, bay leaf, and bouillon. MIx. Heat until it simmers.
  • Mix 3 tbsp flour with 2 tbsp water. Stir flour mixture into simmering chiken and broth. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until chicken is well done.
  • For dumplings: combine flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and parsley. Cut in shortening until mixture forms balls. Stir in cold water.
  • Remove cover from chicken. Drop in dumpling dough by the tablespoon on top of chicken. Cover and cook 15 to 20 minutes or until dumplings are dry and cooked through.
  • Serve chicken and dumplings together with gravy over both.
