How to make it

  • Add cake base ingredients to bread machine in order listed.
  • Start the basic cycle and let the bread machine do the work for you!
  • Following the second knead, remove the pan from the machine and let it rise on your counter for about an hour.
  • Don't worry if it doesn't double in size - it will work.
  • While the dough is resting, make the topping.
  • Cream the butter.
  • Mix the flour and sugar and add to butter gradually, mixing in before adding more.
  • Add eggs one at a time and mix thoroughly.
  • Add milk and mix.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Press dough into a the bottom and up the sides of a 9x13 baking pan. (don't use one with very low sides, as it may rise in the oven a little too much and your topping might overflow the pan - can you tell I did that once?)
  • Prick the dough with a fork.
  • Spread topping over base and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  • It is done when the top looks a little crusty, but still gooey in the middle.
  • Let cool before serving, it will sink and look weird, but will be delicious!
