Mrs. Bristow must have been a very good friend and cook. Her recipes are sprinkled throughout my grandma's recipe book. For the date lovers.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup dates cut fine
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 1/3 cups brown sugar
  • large lump of butter
  • whipped cream or lemon sauce

Directions
  1. Mix together the dates, flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and milk.
  2. This will be stiff.
  3. Spread in and 8 x 8 or 8 x 10 greased pan.
  4. 2nd step
  5. Stir together the boiling water, brown sugar, butter and when well blended pour over the 1st mixture.
  6. Bake in a slow oven (350) oven for about one hour.
  7. Serve alone or with whipped cream or lemon sauce
