Ingredients

How to make it

  • In a bowl mix warm water, yeast, salt and sugar together until it is foamy.
  • Add flour one cup at a time kneading until it is well mixed and you have a stiff dough that is not sticky.
  • Rub the dough in oil and over the top of the bowl place a warm wet rag
  • Let the dough rest in a warm place and rise until it is about twice its original size. I'd suggest letting the bread rise over night or make the dough in the morning and let it rise while you are away at work.
  • After the first rise. On a flat baking sheet, sprinkle flour or cornmeal so the dough will not stick.
  • Shape the dough into a loaf (I like a thick, square loaf for sandwich slices) and place the loaf on the baking sheet.
  • Let the dough rise another 5 minutes
  • In the oven place a pan with water in it on the bottom rack
  • Place the flat baking sheet and loaf on the second rack.
  • DO NOT PRE-HEAT THE OVEN! Put the bread and water into a cold oven, then turn it to 400 degrees
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes.

I love making bread but have never seen or tried Cuban Bread. The denser, the better!! I will give this a try. Thanks much! :)

Ever since eating my first slice of Cuban bread when visiting my sister in Miami many years ago, I was hooked - you describe it perfectly...sooo good, and makes the best toast and "panini" type sandwiches ever. I really appreciate the recipe, because I cannot find true Cuban bread at our local suburban grocery stores (I'm sure I could find it in the city, but I never go grocery shopping when there!). I hope to try this soon - I'm not very experienced at bread-making, but your directions are very clear and concise...I think I can do this!!! Thank you!

I have always loved making breads, and this recipe is so great, especially letting it rise for a long time! I always think that makes the bread so flavorful. Thanks for sharing!
