- 1/4 lb soft butter
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (*fresh ground)
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (*fresh ground)
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- pinch of salt

Ingredients

1.0 lb brown sugar shopping list
1/4 lb soft butter shopping list
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (*fresh ground) shopping list
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (*fresh ground) shopping list
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves shopping list
pinch of salt shopping list

How to make it

Beat sugar and butter together until creamed
Beat in nutmeg, salt, cinnamon, and cloves
To make a Hot Buttered Rum:
Preheat mug with boiling water.
Drain, and add 1 heaping teaspoon of Rum Batter (will melt a bit)
Add 1.5 oz Puerto Rican Rum
Fill mug with HOT water.
Traditionally one would hit the drink with a hot poker (they use a large metal swizzle stick heated up.. makes for a nice show at a bar.. and a nice sizzle..)
Garnish with an 8" stick of cinnamon...
(needed... as it adds much more cinnamon flavour)

This is wrong. I too found this photo in my newly acquired Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide (1972) - after finding a bunch of these for sale at yard sales and consignment shops. I was intrigued. But after hunting for some confirmation that hot buttered rum is what the device was used for, I discovered that it is a fire starter. And somehow I now own one. I lost my recipe several years ago, and this sounds very similar - when the cold weather returns to our neck of the woods this fall, THIS drink will be ready to warm to soul!!
