Ingredients
  • Pemican originated by the American Indians and is basically dried meat such as deer, buffalo, rabbit ,squirrel, antelope or beef.
  • They dried the meat over a low fire.
  • You may use Jerky for this, buy or made by your hunt.
  • Dried fruit and herbs are added to the meat and it then is mixed with just enough of the fat of the animal to form it into solid blocks.
  • Different Tribes,different add to's.
  • A man (or)Woman exerting themself hard like you have to do in the wilderness craves fatty food and this fits the bill.
  • Pemican keeps indefinitely, and many, many years ago was given to the United States Air Corps Jet Bombers as part of their survival ration.

Directions
  1. When the meat is dry,(or) use Jerky that you buy.
  2. Pound or place in food grinder.
  3. For each pound of meat.
  4. Mix 2 Tablespoons of Sugar.
  5. 2 oz of Dried Fruit or Herbs.
  6. Add 5 oz of Suet, and stir well.
  7. Form into solid blocks and store in glass jars,or other containers.
  8. While out ,take a good sized piece of pemican and place it in a pot of boiling water, add a good teaspoon or so of chili powder and you have an excellent wilderness, survival meal.
  9. If you happen to have dried beans on you, then even better.

Great history recipe high 5 thanks

Way Cool Joyce... You get a high 5 for uniqueness....;-)~

Different idea.

Thanks for the history lesson
that would be way cool to take on a camping trip
light weight, easy to back pack in

Made food close to this when I lived in N. Georgia. It was survival food. We did not hunt the way people do today. We would be gone for a week at a time.

Thank you so much for bringing back such memories. You have my *5*
