This is how my grandmother always fixed kraut. Rinsing the kraut takes away a lot of the salt and the apples and brown sugar mellow out the flavors. Serve with boiled potatoes and rye bread.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound Kielbasa; sliced
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 large onion; chopped
  • 1 large Apple; cored and diced
  • 1 quart Sauerkraut; rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup Apple Juice
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar

Directions
  1. Brown kielbasa in oil in dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and saute until onion is translucent.
  3. Add apples and saute for a minute until they start to soften.
  4. Add rinsed and drained sauerkraut, apple juice and brown sugar, stir to combine.
  5. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
