Mashed Turntoes With Lemon-Kissed Fruit Topping

- 4 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes (about 10 cups) shopping list
- 3 pounds turnips, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes (9 cups) shopping list
- Enough light chicken broth to cover veggie mix shopping list
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter or regular butter shopping list
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or regular butter shopping list
- 2 tart, medium red cooking apples, cored and coarsely chopped shopping list
- 1/2 cup whole dates, pitted and snipped shopping list
- 1/4 cup brown sugar shopping list
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice shopping list
How to make it
- In a 6- to 8-quart Dutch oven combine sweet potatoes, turnips, and enough light chicken broth to cover.
- Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 12 to 15 minutes or until tender.
- Drain well in a very large colander.
- Return vegetables to the Dutch oven and add the 3 tablespoons butter and 1 teaspoon salt.
- Mash vegetables with a potato masher until nearly smooth.

- in a skillet melt the 2 tablespoons butter.
- Add apples, dates, and brown sugar.
- Cook and stir until sugar is dissolved and apples are just tender.
- Stir in lemon juice.
- To serve, mound hot vegetables in a serving bowl and garnish center with the relish.
