Homemade Playdough Recipe
Add Step-by-Step Photos

One way to save money and have a fun afternoon during a cold and rainy fall/winter day is to make playdough. This is the first time I have done it in the microwave and I will never go back to the stovetop.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt (the cheapest stuff)
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 4 teaspoons oil
  • 1 cup water

Directions
  1. Combine the dry ingredients.
  2. Heat the water in the microwave 1 minute.
  3. Stir the oil into the water.
  4. Using a whisk and stir the flour and water together until smooth.
  5. Microwave on high for 2 minutes (I have a 1400 watt microwave).
  6. Using a rubber spatula, stir together, scraping from the bottom, it will be very stiff.
  7. Turn out onto the counter and carefully knead until smooth and cool; it will be very hot at first.
  8. Split into two parts and using food colorin paste, knead in until you reach the color you would like.
  9. I figure this is two colors of dough for under 50 cents!
  10. Store in an airtight container. It will last a good many playtimes.
  11. It doesn't taste good, but it won't hurt the little ones who put everything in their mouth.
  12. Other ways of making:
  13. Add 1 package of koolaid to dry mix. The dough smells great!
  14. Add cocoa powder for chocolate - smells great!
  15. Add instant coffee and/or cocoa powder.

Yea "paylo"! I made this a lot when my kids were littler. We'll have to make some again. I agree, the microwave wins over stove top!
