How to make it

  • Directions for the first 8 ingredients:
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Gently, but thoroughly, combine the first 8 ingredients and form into bite-size meatballs, placing them in one layer in a large, shallow baking dish. Note that the more tenderly you handle the meatballs, the tenderer they will be.
  • For the remaining the ingredients:
  • In a 12-inch skillet, over medium heat saute onion in butter until soft. Add flour and cook until golden brown, stirring with a flat whisk. Add remaining ingredients except mushrooms and wine, and cook slowly until thickened, stirring from time to time.
  • Place mushrooms and wine in a small saucepan, and cook over high heat for 5 minutes. Stir in sauce. Pour sauce over meatballs and bake, uncovered, for 1 hour. Serve in a chafing dish, if you'd like.
