How to make it

  • Cook raisins in water, save juice to mix with soda.
  • Cream brown sugar and shorting and raisins and juice
  • Add eggs
  • Add flour, nutmeg and nuts
  • Last add sugar
  • Mix and then bake as cookies, nice spoon full.
  • bake 375 about 7 min, or light brown. Do not over cook as it will make them hard.

    I have had these. My grandmother called them, paddy cookies,lol. They are delicious and I don't think they are too sweet.

    Raisin juice is the water left after cooking the raisins. Adds the flavor. This recipe sounds real sweet in this day and age. I don't remember them to be that sweet, but if you have ideas to cut the sugar please share.
