Ingredients
  • 1 1/4 pound ground beef chuck
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 large red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/3 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 tsp of cayenne pepper
  • -------------------------------------------
  • 4 large soft hamburger buns, split, buttered and grilled
  • -------------------------------------------
  • 2 cups cole slaw mix-I prefer the angel hair slaw mix
  • 3 tbsp of salad oil
  • 1 tbsp of orange juice (sour orange mix can be found in with ethnic foods, other wise sub orange and lemon juce)
  • 1/2 of a lime squeezed
  • 1 tsp of soy sauce
  • 2 tsp of sugar
  • 1/4 tsp of garlic powder
  • 2 minced green onions, slivered to mimic slaw mix shred
  • --------------------------------------------
  • 1 small red onion, cut into rings
  • 1 tomato, sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • ---------------------------------------------
  • 1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce minced
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 tsp of ground oregano

Directions
  1. Mix together beef, onion, bell pepper, garlic, oregano, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper.
  2. Divide into four equal portions and flatten into patties with a slight divot in the middle.
  3. That way when it is grilled, the middle won't get too thick.
  4. Refrigerate, covered.
  5. Meanwhile prepare slaw:
  6. Whisk the orange juice, lime juice, sugar, soy sauce, garlic powder and oil.
  7. Pour over slivered green onion and slaw mix.
  8. Toss with tongs to coat evenly. Refrigerate to wilt and flavors to meld..
  9. Heat your charcoal grill to med high heat.
  10. Oil the grill.
  11. Grill the prepped burgers over medium coals about 10 minutes total.
  12. Butter and toast rolls while grilling burgers.
  13. Grill thick slices of red onion and tomato on well oiled grill until they develop a bit of char, that adds immensely to the overall flavor.
  14. Stir together minced chipotle, ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard, and a touch more oregano. Set aside.
  15. Assemble burger on toasted bun, top with charred onion, tomato, and wilted slaw.
  16. Drizzle with spicy sauce.
  17. It is drippy, delicious and you'll never miss the cheese.

Awesome!

This would be great at a Aussie bbq ~ 5 :D

Wow, love the slaw here! The burger ingredients sound fantastic! 5 forks!

Made these tonight and the hubby said they were "too HOT". The raw garlic in the beef did contribute a bit more "bite" than expected and I will have to cut out the cayenne next time for him and dress his burger with plain mayo. But otherwise they were very flavorful and I liked the heat. Just a word of warning for those with sensitive palates.

We like it with a little bite around my house so this will be a hit with us.
