How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour three 9" round cake pans. Set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine hot coffee and cocoa. Stir until smooth. Allow to cool.
  • Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt into a medium mixing bowl. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Add sour cream and vanilla. Beat until well combined.
  • Add flour mixture to butter mixture alternating with coffee/cocoa mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat on low until just combined after each addition.
  • Pour batter into prepared pans.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool in pans for 10 minutes then turn layers out onto wire rack.
  • Cool completely.
  • Frosting:
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine cocoa, butter and milk. Beat until smooth.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar.
  • Continue beating until smooth, creamy, and spreadable.
  • Frost layers.
  • Sprinkle chocolate chips over the top and press into sides of cake.
  • Serve and enjoy!
