How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F., Grease and lightly flour 3 -8 inch layer pans.
  • In a small bowl, mix 3 tbsp. cocoa and red food coloring into a paste, set aside
  • In a lrg bowl,use a mixer to cream together 1/2 c. vegetable shorting and 1 1/2 c. sugar.
  • Continue beating, Add coloring paste and 2 eggs, beat well.
  • Add 1 c. buttermilk, 2 1/2 c. flour (sifted), 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 tsp. salt and beat well.
  • Stir in by spoon 1 Tbsp. vinegar blend well.
  • Add 1 tbsp. baking soda, mix well, and bake for 30-35 min.
  • Mean while: cream with a mixer 1 stick butter (softened), 1/2 c. vegetable shorting, 1 c. confection sugar , and 3 tbsp. flour (1 at a time).
  • Add 2/3 c. milk 1 tsp. almond flavoring, Beat well.
  • Let cakes cool on a rack and ice.
