I have had this particular recipe for years. A gourmet, delcious non meat vegetable pie. Full of good things and great flavors! When you cut into this each piece has the layers of cream cheese, hard cooked eggs and then cabbage filling.

Ingredients
  • Torta Pie dough:
  • 3 c Flour
  • 6 lg Eggs
  • 1 tb Baking powder
  • 1/3 c Plus 1 Tbs. crisco
  • Pinch salt and pepper
  • Filling:
  • 3 c Shredded cabbage
  • 1 lg Onion chopped
  • 1/2 lb Mushrooms
  • Basil, marjoram, tarragon
  • Salt and pepper
  • 4 oz Cream cheese
  • 4 Hard boiled eggs, sliced
  • Fresh chopped dill or basil

Directions
  1. Prepare pie dough.
  2. You can use this or any favorite rich pie dough
  3. Some torta doughs contain a bit of wine in the dough and butter instead of crisco which is a nice alteration for the dough or if you avoid crisco
  4. Combine dry ingredients.
  5. Cut in crisco to form coarse crumbs.
  6. beat eggs and stir in.
  7. dough should be soft but pliable.
  8. Cover and chill while preparing filling.
  9. Saute shredded cabbage and onion and sliced mushrooms in a
  10. skillet with a bit of olive oil and cook and stir until cabbage is wilted and very tender, about 20 minutes.
  11. Season to taste with basil, marjoram, taragonand salt and pepper or as desired.
  12. Divide dough and roll out 1/2 on lightly floured surface to fit a 10
  13. inch deep pie dish( could be spring form pan also ).
  14. Spread bottom crust with the softened cream cheese.
  15. Layer on the sliced eggs .
  16. Add cooked and cooled cabbage filling.
  17. Cover with chopped dill or basil.
  18. Add top crust and crimp and seal edges.
  19. Slittop crust in several places to let steam escape.
  20. Brush with an egg glaze.
  21. bake 350 about 30 minutes.
  22. Let cool a bit and then slice
  23. Reheats very well also
