I always save my holiday cookie tins from last year to use and buy new ones every year from Walmart or Kmart. I can usually get them for a dollar a piece.

I also use festive plastic or paper plates and cover with the red, green or blue-colored plastic wrap and finish with a matching satin ribbon or small Christmas/ Hannukah ornament.

I also bought some colored chinese take-out boxes (you know the ones that fold closed with the wire handle) and am going to fill those (firat with colored tissue paper) and put a bow/ornament on them to give out this year...they are too cute. I got those at Michael's and were a bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion.

Those pricey containers are worth it because after all, YOUR cookies are going in there and they are priceless!! I save all cookie tins that I get. I had some stored in a cedar chest once....not a good idea....they got the cedar smell and mixed with cookies it wasn't good. Now I know better.

Jett, your experience with the cedar chest brought back a memory! My husband's great aunt made toll house cookies for everyone's birthdays and anniversaries. Then we got a funny tasting batch! She was stocking up on baking supplies on sale and storing them in a closet with her winter clothes and lots of mothballs!

You already know, I get $1.00 xmas baskets from the dollar store. This year I have some small tins I got at Michael's for $1.00 each, and I am going to put my Rum Cashew or Sherried Walnuts in them. Also, I bought some paper bakeware from Sur La Table that I am going to bake my pumpkin bread in (recipe and picture on my site) and also some xmasy chinese take-out boxes that I can pack cookies in. All are going into the baskets and will wrap in cellophane with a big ribbon and give out as gifts to friends etc. At least this is what I am PLANNING to do! Ha! I am soooo uncreative, that when I can do any little thing, I am thrilled!

One year we had our cookies come inside a paper towel roll. The creative lady wrapped her cookies in foil, slid them inside the roll and then wrapped the whole thing in solid colored paper with a clear cellophane twisting the ends and tying with ribbons. It looked like a huge candy piece. It was very fun and not horribly expensive. You have to think ahead and save those rolls. I guess a t.p. roll would make mini servings, eh? LOL

I love the chinese take out box idea. We often have thrift store plates wrapped in crinkly cellophane and a mini ornament tied to the ribbon. Those often sold quickest at the bake sale. Some of the gals packed their cookies on picture frames, so there was a gift included with the cookie bonanza. As long as the buttery cookies were cello-wrapped and sturdy, we had no worries about food safety. You could only do this with a sturdy cookie. Some of the more delicate cookies don't make for unique packages and suffer greatly in the over-the-top creative efforts. Alas, the cookie crumbles.
