Your Fresh Food Sources

  • keeperrox 16 years ago
Where do you get your fresh foods? Do you go to the grocery store? Do you have a local farmers' market or farmstand? Are you a part of a co-op or CSA? Do you go to the butcher? Or, do you grow your own vegetables and raise your own livestock?

I get my fresh food from both the local farmers' market and the grocery store. If there were more than just the 2 of us, I would join a local CSA, but I'm afraid that too much would go to waste, and I can't find anyone to go in on it with me.

    How about you?

In the summer, my almost-daily stop is at the farmers market. When they close for the season, it's a sad day for me! But we have several very good produce depts in some non-chain grocers around here - that's where I prefer to buy my produce the rest of the year...it's more reasonably prices and lots of variety - especially at the more ethnic markets . A new market in our area (Garden Fresh - they've been around awhile, it's just new to my area of town), gets fresh produce in daily, so I can usually find what I need there. I would love to belong to a coop, but like you keeperrox, there are only 2 of us for most meals, and it just would be too much produce. By the way - love your idea for this group!

I do a 'loop' in my local area, since certain stores have better produce than others, better fresh herbs elsewhere - fortunately with the price of gas here in NY, I have a farmers market within walking distance along with one grocery store that sells great herbs and produce at affordable prices....

I have been into preparing 'slow food' for awhile now, do a google search on slow food - its very interesting....one way to do slow food is to follow any of the recipes you find in this group here, its about less processed foods and more 'from scratch' and being more aware of how far food you buy has traveled in getting to your local store....

one thing I can tell you, I have been feeling healthier and having more energy by eating basically almost everything I eat from scratch or near scratch....yes it may take some time to prepare, but with some organization on board, it's super easy to set up meals for the week.
