Whats the rule on submitting a recipe from another site, i.e. Allrecipes. I have tried some great recipes from there and was wondering if I can share them here if I give credit or what. Also how about really old magazines or cookbooks, etc. I've seen people mention recipes from estate sale cookbooks and "courtesy of" Paula Deen or Bobby Flay or somebody like that, and wondered if they got permission or if they just gave credit. The recipes are after all free to all on the net(except for mags/some cookbooks) Any thoughts?

As long as you give credit to the author of the recipe, it's okay to post from other sources in my opinion......I would not be remiss to say that's how most on this site feel.....So, go ahead, a good recipe is a good recipe no matter where it comes from...:)

I'll be digging up some faves tomorrow! Thanks! I really want to submit some of my Mom's greatest hits, but she's all about a bit of this and a handful of that and you know I don't measure etc. I get my cooking style from her. Frustrates my family cause the recipe never turns out the same way twice. They'll say make such and such and I have to say I can't remember what I all put in there. I know, I know , I should write it down, but who has time with stirring this and chopping that?

I cook the same way RR......and can't tell you how many times I've made something and said to myself, "Darn, I should have written that down.".....A pinch of this and a pinch of that never comes out the same way twice, does it....:)

You can always say "to taste"......that will cover it.

Some of us just put a note at the end of the directions that say something like: I've found that this is better with 1/2 the sugar or only 1 tsp of salt, etc.

Don't forget if you're posting a photo to give credit for that too.

Me? Post a photo? That's too funny! I don't even remember how I got my avatar on here. We're talking dinosaur, LOL.. You can try to give me instructions but all my menopausal brain reads is BLAH,BLAH,BLAH.

I am bringing this back to the top for newer members.

I noticed a recipe in "New Today" that was taken word for word (including the photo) from a copyrighted food site and posted here with no credit given to the originator of the recipe or her photo. The name of the recipe has been changed.

I myself have posted recipes from other sites and sources (although all photos posted by me are mine) but, as most members do, I give credit to the source. I'm not talking Grandma's recipe here. This recipe was a copy of copyrighted material.

I am hoping this newer foodie will see my post here. Newer users may want to read the "Terms" link at the bottom.

Not trying to open a can of worms here. :)

    Good point, Frankieanne.

Also, I have some recipes that I know I got online, have had them for years, but, didn't write down where I got them. When I really like one, and want to post it, I will say "Found online" or "Found online years ago".

In that case most of us say " I got this from so & so, but added my own twist"...

The verbatim copying of written materials and photos with no credit given is a
BIG NO-NO.......it is stealing, pure and simple.

Not to mention it's just dumb....a lot of members here will have seen it and remember seeing a published recipe and then you just look like a phony when you post it as your own.

Good point to bring up occasionally, Frankieanne!

Its especially dumb, pat, if you post the recipe and photo the same day it hits the blog, as is what happened in the case I mentioned. :-D

Sure is! I doubt if it's any use in hoping it will stop........I really would like to message the offenders when I see it.

Maybe something like .........."help us protect the integrity of the site and avoid copywright issues by kindly citing the source this recipe was taken from".....probably too much, huh?

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Good for you, Frodo!!!

I'm guilty of doing about the same......I've left comments that say....Oh, I love this...found it in such and such magazine, we loved it when we tried it.
So nice of you to copy it for everyone!

    My bad!

Just stumbled upon this 'group' topic. It is a nice gesture to help folks & welcome them. Re copyright, this topic should only be addressed in faqs by attorneys - not subject to interpretation (or leaving sarcastic remarks). It is opening a can of worms -- so far, if it's not broken, don't interpret it/try to fix it.

Welcome Californiacook.......While I understand what you're saying, this site has been "broken" for a long time.....Even the site manager doesn't care about it more than it's members....And in my humble opinion, that leads to a site that's eventually going to destroy itself. I love Grouprecipes and I've found some wonderful recipes and made some great friends....I've learned at this point to take from it what you want and leave the rest behind.....Again, welcome and hope you are enjoying the site as much as I am.
