Classic French Bread

This bread is FANTASTIC!!! Very good directions too! My bread took a little over 5 cups of flour to come to a perfect elasticity. I passed on doing the rolling up part of the dough, I didn't want to get fancy and screw it up, so I just made them into big long oval's, the typical shape of the French bread. The bread came out nice and soft on the inside and a very chewy crust, everyone loved it and the flavor was great, perfect dipped in soup :) Froze one of the loaves, so we will see later how it defrost, but I'm expecting it to come out just fine. Highly recommended!!!

Beautiful looking bread, Mommyluvs2cook! Gosh, I haven't made bread in a long time, but I saved this recipe to inspire me. Hey, save that extra loaf for French toast - yum!

P.S. I don't roll out bread dough to shape it, either, and prefer using my hands :)

Great photos, mommyluvs2cook! Your bread looks perfect. I like this "from scratch" recipe. So many only give bread machine instructions and never go through the process of how to actually mix and knead by hand. I've made French bread a couple of times, but really have a hard time getting inspired to make bread. Plus, it's not good for us as we can eat an entire loaf when it's fresh out of the oven.

I hear ya on that, DIZ ;) There's little as good as fresh bread from the oven with butter! I've never made French bread, and make challah for us and friends. Soooo good and the crust takes on a bit of a pastry-like flavor by the next day - yum!

I don't have or want a bread machine and prefer mixing and kneading by hand, too. A co-worker used to bring in bread she'd made in her bread machine and it was always so dry. That and the odd square shaped loaves just totally turned me off of wanting one. People that have them love 'em, though, so to each his own.

    Thank you Manella!
Yes, Bakerme, French toast!! I would love to try this one out French Toast but I don't have the sour cream :( Darn! I do have a favorite though, the hint of OJ is great! http://www.food.com/recipe/french-toast-59791
I know what you mean on all the bread machine recipes DIZ!! I know there is always a way to convert them to by hand, but I don't like to mess with it and try and figure it out lol :) I tried the end piece with a little butter and that was good enough for me. The rest of the family I had to cut off after two pieces each...

    Beautiful loaves!!
I've never seen an egg wash applied before, I guess that's in lieu of spritzing water on the baguettes to get that "crust". It looks so good, and I bet it smelled wonderful while baking too! :)
I loved my bread machine, I used it to start the dough for me on the first rise. But I never baked in it, it was old and bit the dust. Now I use my stand mixture for the first half of kneading, and finish with my hands. I love kneading, but not for 10 or 15 minutes.....dang carpal tunnel in both hands ;)
