This is quite a messy food affair.
It's the thickest muffin batter I have ever made. Reminds me of a very thick sticky cookie dough that has to be refrigerated and sliced to put on the cookie sheet.
Had trouble telling if the muffin was done because of the applesauce on top that kept the toothpick coming out looking like there was uncooked dough in the center. So I went ahead and baked an additional 10 minutes as Notyo did.
It's quite a good muffin but I have a couple of suggestions.
Put the applesauce on top of the muffin before putting the crumbly topping on top of the applesauce. It would help in seeing whether the muffins are browning, as the applesauce camouflages the browning process.
Stir the applesauce into the muffin mix to give the muffin dough more slack so it is easier to spoon into the muffin tins.
Or add additional milk to make the muffin mix a little thinner. It too may help the baking process.

Oh heaven's they are a bit of a mess, for sure. I like your suggestions very much. Be sure to refrigerate if in a warm and humid area. They will spoil quickly.
