Point's Honey Lemon Herb Chicken

  • mrpiggy 10 years ago
Rummaging through Point's fridge, I found this: ) Its been just over a month since Ive made chicken and this came out great. Very moist and tender. I also made the rice. However I discovered that Im not a big fan of turmeric. A bit strong for my taste. I used brown rice. Oh and I doubled everything. Had a 4lb package of b/s breast.

Very interesting on the turmeric. It's used more for a coloring than its spice content and in such small quantities that its spice content is negligible. It's widely used in curry powder, mustard, butter, cheese, relish, food and fabric coloring and if believed quite a few medicinal remedies. Could it be the five spice powder you are objecting to?
Nice pic. Thanks for posting it. I'm jealous of the fridge.

Hey Mr, P, Points is probably right, there is something in 5 spice that I'm not a fan of and that could be what your tasting...turmeric is fairly mild...but who knows, everyone's palate is different.
I love your little specks of red pepper flakes on your chicken. So pretty!

Oh, I didnt even think of the 5 spice. I just opened that and smelled it. Thats the culprit, alright. I should have smelled it before using. I have done that with all new spices I have used in the past. Someone gave me this bottle and I never used it til now and forgot to smell it. YUK. .............I have a free bottle of spice for anyone : ).........Only used once. Thanks guys

It's a shame you don't like 5-spice. I use it so much I grind my own to save a few shekels. Look at a home made spice recipe and see if you can determine which spice you are not enamored with.
I'm betting it's the anise or fennel flavor. They both have a light liquorish smell and taste. I never did like the red or black liquorish candy ropes growing up but the anise and fennel flavors are light enough for enjoyment now.

I like the sounds of that recipe. I may give that a whirl myself. The picture looks great!
    Five spice powder:
    Szechuan pepper
    star anise
    cloves
    cinnamon
    fennel
Yep - lots of licorice-y flavors going on there. I've used it rarely. I haven't seen that many recipes that call for it so my bottle will probably never get used up either.

I put it in my cheesy rice recipe which I make a lot. And the turmeric too.
Have trouble finding Szechaun peppers. I use black peppercorns instead.

Cloves, I dont like. I dont know about fennel. ( is that the seeds in rye bread? If so I like those.) And I dont know about star anise. Szechuan pepper I do like.

I had this chicken cold for lunch. I thought the liquid would thicken once cold. Nope. Still thin. Very, very good tho. Chicken was still very moist.

NP, when I saw that fridge pic, I had to grab it. I could just picture Points going out to it to get one of those beers he has left from the 6pak he bought 5 years ago : )

Those are caraway seeds in rye bread Mr. P. Fennel is one of the spices used in Italian sausage usually, so if you like that, then your good with fennel :) It's probably just the cloves, and or star anise.
