Stupendous Saturday!

Good Morning everyone! My cousin just left. It'll take him about 7 1/2 hours to drive back to Pennsylvania so he has a long day ahead of him. We had THE BEST time. It really couldn't have gone any better, and I can't wait to see him again.

I was too busy yesterday to even pop on. We brought Jim to the Canadian War Museum as there was a small exhibit re: the battle of Beaumont-Hamel which he really wanted to see. We were there for most of the day and then home for dinner. I made
Rock Cornish Game Hens With Crab Stuffing
with a Beet Carpaccio salad. He loved it. The day before we brought him downtown for a tour of Ottawa and went EVERYWHERE!!! Visited Parliament Hill, walked all through the Byward Market (past the sink hole on Rideau/Sussex), up to the National Art Gallery and also over to the Governor General's residence. It was a good day. Grilled steak that evening with sauteed asparagus and twice baked spinach potatoes.

How is your ear and throat this morning Linda? I'm glad you have an appointment Monday. That California pizza salad looked yummy. When are you thinking about heading to SC again for another look? The house sounds perfect.

Jim told me the entire story of how he ended up in Pennsylvania but it was a long circuitous route Joce. :) The short version is that he was a teacher initially and taught in St. John's and then got a position in Oregon, and then after he retired from teaching he worked in marketing management and was going all over the world until he tired of that and decided to make his home base in Pennsylvania and work out from there. He is fully retired now and travels a lot with his wife and their Corgi. He's a super nice guy.

Glad you didn't have to battle too much traffic to retrieve Bri Michelle. Did she have a great time?

My condolences on your cousin's passing Karen. That's very sad.

Really nice to hear from you yesterday Bren. You have an awful lot on your plate. Congrats to your Son on his University Graduation. How wonderful! I'm afraid I don't have a lot of patience for demanding people, and probably even less so for demanding in-laws. :( Take good care. We miss you in here too!!!

Jim and I are heading to the Purdon Conservation Area today. I'm going to pack a picnic lunch.

Not sure about dinner. I have quite a few leftovers in the fridge. Supposed to be hot today too. Best run. Made cousin Jim an omelette before he left but hubby Jim and I haven't had brekkie yet.
Wishing everyone a great day! Pic below of my cousin and I taken this morning.

Good Morning Everyone! It's Saturday and hope you all have a terrific day.

Great picture Janet! So happy you had such a great time and got to know another relative. The Conservation looks like a fun and beautiful place. Enjoy!

Since it's Summer and it's hot my attention is turning to salads ... So everyone, what are some of your favorite dinner salads to make? or cold soups ...
I'm not a big fan of Gazpacho but I do like this one, it's actually "Company Worthy". It's been a while since I've made it because as usual I'm the only one who'll eat it. I used V8 too instead of tomato juice. I liked it because it used zucchini instead of green peppers which can take over the taste. The grilled shrimp too goes very well and adds needed protein to "fill you up".

Just the usual planned for today. It's going to be a hot one.

Hi Bren! Nice to see you here. Congrats to your son, does he have plans with what he'll be doing with his degree yet? Hang in their with your MIL(?)(not sure who the people are you spoke of) but she is probably scared and is acting out. Tough to take, I know, perhaps bringing her something to do might help and too remember you have a life too so do what you need to do for you first and that's that.

Probably will be taking a trip to SC in a few days to finalize this house thing. Will be speaking with the sales guy this afternoon and going over things AGAIN and this time DH and I will go to SC and finalize it all before signing. One minute DH wants to move, next he doesn't, then he does, then he doesn't ... if he doesn't knock it off soon and make up his mind I'm going to have him committed. I would rather just stay put because I'm settled and dread a move but know I'd be happy there too so to me I could care less where we live. He's the one.

    Hi all.

Janet, so glad your cousin had a nice visit. It sounds like he is a really nice guy. Maybe some day you can meet his wife also, that would be nice.

Linda, good luck with the ongoing house search. Hope it goes well. LOL on the indecisive HB. I love salads and will probably fix one for lunch to counteract the high carb spaghetti we are having tonight since GS is here.

Hi Bren. GlD to hear from you. Good luck with MIL. Like Linda said, she is feelin bad and probably not happy with life in general. On the few times I was hospitalized I just read (pre-computer era) or put up with the routine. (Patting self on the back.).

The oven needs wiping down after self cleaning, laundry is piling up, floors desperately need stiffening to remove pet hair, kitchen needs minor going over, and we decided to work on indoor things since it is hot a muggy again today.

No rain from the storms that went South and North. Radio shows we had a fire call but we did not hear it and no one called (hoping it was not a drastic one), my radio is out of commission and his has to be charged every day or it dies so they usually call in case we did not hear.

Mel is on my lap and Fritz is napping beside Wayne, who is also asleep. His holy terror personality has serried after a long walk and brief cat-harassing play time.

Guess my house will not clean itself so it is time to remove my self from my comfy recliner and be productive.

Hi Tina, Marie, and all the MIA.

A really nice pic of you and your cousin, Janet! He looks like a really nice guy and he also looks like a teacher to me. Your new table and chair set looks lovely on the patio Jim built. Purdon Conservation Area is really beautiful when all the orchids are in bloom. I am not sure if they are in bloom yet, I haven't heard. Mr. Purdon the man who created the Conservation area is the father of a friend of mine. They also rent out cabins on the water there which are quite back to nature. No power or inside plumbing but they are nice. I am glad Jim (your cousin) seemed to really enjoy his stay.

I am not a big fan of Gazpacho either, Linda. Good luck with whatever you decide on a house or property.

I was thinking about your GS last night when I couldn't sleep, Karen. Do you think he might like those sport power protein shake mixes that they sell today? Or even Chocolate Ensure? Good luck with all the cleaning don't overdo it in the the heat wave you are in. Take Care.
It was nice of you to take the time to drop by, Bren. Sorry to hear about your MIL. I remember you saying how demanding she was quite awhile ago. As Karen said Hang in there! It must be so frustrating for you. Big Congratulations to your son! I am sure you are beaming with pride.
Den did the grocery shopping this morning and also did his beer run. Today and tomorrow this little town of about 7,000, will be invaded by about 10 to 15,00 people as it is our annual Kilt Run. They are trying to beat their record of attendance for the Guinness Book of records again. It is a hoot to watch all the different people dressed up in kilts and tartan. Yes it is going to be a really hot one today! Den will have his normal fare of cheeseburgers and oven fries and I will either have lamb chops or pan fried cod with a big salad on the side.
    Wishing everyone a great day!

Hi Joce. GS drinks Boost or Ensure type drinks but he can not have dyes or MSG or artificial flavors, cured meats, sodas, and a host of other things. Can't wait for the neurology work up to pinpoint possible causes. Chocolate is iffy but he can have some. I will have our daughter look up ingredients on some of those sport drinks.

We are both staying indoors due to the heat. It looks like more of the same, the lack of rain is getting scary. Fritz is asking for his lunchtime outing but it will be a short one.

Gee what a worry it must be for you, Wayne and your daughter, Karen! I really hope they can find the cause of it. I know you can buy just straight protein powder, which can be added to things. Does Fritz seem to be getting trained now?

Joce, Fritz has improved. I would not call him trained yet. But he asks to go outside now and we keep him in a crate when we are gone.

GS is here, munching on Nutella crackers (ugh!) and watching the science channel. Laundry is sufficiently dented so no more lifting and toting. Really would like cooler days again, too hot to do anything.

Really a great improvement for Fritz! I don't care for Nutella myself but he is getting protein and other good things from the nuts. When it is too hot no one feels like doing much. So don't:)

I am a Gazpacho lover. Could eat the stuff every day. I like a good Taco salad, but as far as dinner salads go, I really don't make them as I don't think they'd fly with my DH. :) I have an awesome Beet and Pistachio salad recipe with a white wine, tarragon dressing that I got from a lady on GR that no longer has her recipes up here. Thank Goodness I'd printed it off before she removed it as I'd have been heartbroken if I'd lost it. I also used to make a nice cold fruit soup, strawberry based with small chunks of banana floating in it.

Hope you got all your house cleaning done Karen. My son used to like Nutella when he was early teens. LOL. I could never eat it myself.

Thanks Joce. That's very cool you know Mr. Purdon. Is he still alive? What a wonderful thing that he did and then gave it over to the Mississippi Conservation Authority to watch over. We had an amazing time and I've never seen anything like that before. It was well worth the trek. The orchids are 90% in bloom at the moment. I have a craving for a nice grilled burger but cod also sounds wonderful.

We've decided to eat up a bunch of leftovers for dinner. I made a Gourmet lunch to bring with us to the conservation area.
    Mrs Mcgarrigles Stuffed Baguette
and then two figs with a gorgeous blue cheese I recently purchased. They were SO good. Will get more. On the way home we stopped in to a strawberry vendor. First time I've seen them out this season. Got a quart for $6 which seems a bit pricey but oh my they were yummy.

I'm not a huge fan of Nutella, I wouldn't turn it down if offered it but also won't make a trip to the grocery store to buy it but I did make this bread a few times and let me tell you ... FANTASTIC! It wasn't hard either and came out looking like the picture. Who would ever think chocolate and bread go together but they do and do well.

The stuffed Baguette looks wonderful Janet! Yum Yum. Summer fruit when fresh and perfect is worth the $ splurge.

We too stayed inside today Karen because of the heat. Was up around 98 (f). We were going to go out and get something to eat and were just about ready to leave and the sky was so dark, and the thunder started, so we felt it best to just stay put because it looked like a nasty storm rolling in and it was. I pulled out steaks, thawed them and tossed them on the grill and made a mixed green salad for dinner instead.

Yikes on your little town getting "over-ran" with people Joce. I would hunker down at home but that's me, I like people but not crowds.
