Sweet Sunday

  • mbelisle 9 years ago
    Good morning all,
It's early here and still dark since the sun won't come up until after 8:30. The morning is off to a quiet start but a good one.
Milo, or psycho cat, has been catching a mouse a day in the kitchen. He seems to know where they come in because we only ever see one when he gets it and no tell-tale signs that they are in the house all the time but he is not a happy kitty this morning. He chased the mouse behind the microwave, caught it, proudly brought it out to do whatever it is he planned to do with it and then dropped it. It landed on a sticky trap (thankfully for me) but what a frustrated cat when he couldn't get his mouse off the trap! Laura took the mouse and disposed of it but Milo is completely put out now.
Today will have to be a grocery day if I plan to cook much of anything. I have some frozen angus beef patties lined up for patty melts for lunch but after that we are pretty much out of ideas.
Hope everyone has a great day.

Good Morning Michelle! Is that Milo in your Avatar? He's a lovely shade of brown! NOM on patty melts for lunch. Great idea.
I was a keener thankfully last night and took a turkey breast out of the freezer and threw it in a bucket of brine in the fridge overnight. So we'll be having
    Brined Turkey Breast
I was missing more than one ingredient but cobbled together the best I could. I"ve made the recipe before and it was lovely. I have a jar of Jamie Oliver's chicken gravy down in the freezer I need to thaw and then I think mashed potatoes and spinach as sides. I'll finally get my Turkey fix after listening to all your guys Thanksgiving talk recently! :)
Must say I had a big sense of relief when I hit the Group Recipes bookmark and voila up came the website this morning. Whew. And also even got a few warm fuzzies being able to look over the bookmarked recipes I thought were perhaps gone for everymore. :)
Finishing off my last few Christmas cards today. It's chilly outside today so I think hunkering down beside the fire with a book sounds like a most lovely option for a laid back Sunday. Should do up a menu for the coming week as well as I want to do a Costco run tommorow. (Almost out of birdseed)
Marie, so pleased to hear the party was a grand success! :)
Tina, how did house hunting go yesterday. It'd be a fun thing to do I'd think. :)
    Joce...you doing okay today?
Wishing everyone else a lovely, lazy Sunday......

Have to love a psycho cat that earns his keep. I'm glad Milo didn't get stuck in the glue trap. Michelle, I'm excited to read the news re: the new job. Certainly sounds like they are more than interested. I will keep you in my good thoughts. Happy shopping at the grocers, we got a fistful of rainchecks for the specials yesterday. So frustrating.

Sweet Sunday is appropriate. I'm on cookie duty. It has cooled enough to turn on the oven. Although, I am making a no-bake peanut butter cereal drop cookie, it requires stirring and hot sugar which will heat up the kitchen. I plan to make a ginger cookie, salted nut bars and red velvet crinkle cookies.

Dinner is a small tip roast. Now, if I could remember the roasting instructions....every time is a search. Either broccoli rice casserole or rosemary new potatoes with a romaine salad as our side. I do want to make up some egg salad or tuna salad for lunches. I have 2 lbs. of mushrooms that are on the verge, so they are destined to be sauteed today.

Milo, certainly sounds like a character, Michelle:) Is that him in your avatar? If so he is a very handsome unusual looking brown cat. I have a very good feeling you landed that job from the sounds of it. I had forgotten about your daylight loss. We start getting daylight here around 7:00 am. From my hospital room window it looks like a very sunny day here. Now they are telling me I might not go to the hospital in Kingston until Monday, |Tuesday or Wednesday! The waiting is killing me! I bored and almost ready to jump ship unless I hear from someone soon!
LOL Dinner will be out of a hospital kitchen :(
    Wishing everyone a great day!

Morning! Wow on the sun not coming out until after 8:30 Michelle!! That would make for a slow morning here. Lol on the mouse catcher kitty :) I'm sure you'll figure out something delicious for dinner!

Brined Turkey Breast sound delicious Janet! I've never brined anything, but at Whole Foods yesterday saw a package of turkey legs for a great deal, but passed it up since I'm turkeyed out. Kinda wish I would have picked them up now, I think that that brine would have gone good on them. Lol, I was a little worried clicking my grouprecipes link this morning too, I was crossing my fingers :) Have fun making up your menu, that's one of my favorite things to do!

All your cookie and dessert making today Tina is making me crave something sweet! Your dinner sound delicious as well, YUM on the roast! Are you getting any cool weather in FL?

Hi Joce! Uggh on the long wait :( If I could deliver a nice homemade dinner I would be there in a second :) I'm so glad you are able to check in with us!

Yesterday was our family get together and everything was DELICIOUS! I made Spring rolls both fried and not fried. Both turned out great! We also had grilled shrimp, a dish called Scallops Chee Chee, a Thai salad, coconut chicken soup, salted edamame, and mango ice cream for dessert. All was Fantastic! Earlier in the day we went to Penzey's, TJ's and Whole Foods which was a blast. Got tons of spices that I was in desperate need of and filled my freezer up with lots of meat! TJ's had these limited time oreo type cookies that were covered in chocolate and sprinkled with crushed candy canes. SO GOOD! We picked up a couple packs and they were gone by the end of the night. Also I grabbed 2 huge bags of beautiful multi colored carrots that they had for $1.99 a bag! Purple, yellow, red and orange carrots. Love them! I need to make some recipe from here using them so I can post a picture.

Texans game today at noon. Gonna put my team shirt on ;) We ended up getting a tree on the way home last night so we will probably decorate it during the game. I sent Michael to go get some chocolate covered cherries to eat while we decorate. It's a tradition :) Also told him to pick up the new chocolate covered blueberries as well, anyone had those? Not sure yet what dinner is! Hope everyone is having a good day!

    Hi all:)

We'll be watching some football today, it's overcast and will start raining once again tomorrow:) I'll be making Baked Jalapeno Poppers Stuffed With Cream Cheese, along with some smoked turkey cucumber cream cheese wraps, chips & dip. probably some turkey burgers for dinner if we are still hungry:)

Michelle B, I just love the picture of your kitty Milo!

Janet, yes, the party was a success! Lots of tears shed...very touching.they had a slide show of pictures when he was in the Seebees (Navy), whenhe first met Rick's Mom, pics when Rick was a young boy in Australia, their trimaran they sailed on, up to present day..with some Frank Sinatra music playing softly in the backround...

Tina, I would like to make cookies today as well, but have my hands full with all of the appy's for game day:)

Joce, oh dear on the wait! It will be over with before you know it..and you will be feeling great! I'm with Michelle, I
d be there in a heartbeat with a home cooked meal if I could:) xoxox

Michelle from TX! Sounds like such a great day yesterday..I love spring rolls, especially baked:) Recipe????

I love the chocolate covered blueberries. Yum. I get them from Sams.
I think a plate of multicolored roasted carrots would be a beautiful dish, Michelle. Nice that your Thai meal came out so nice. Go Texans! Oh, I would have picked up the turkey legs and smoked them. We don't have a lot of cool weather yet....light sprinkles today, mid 70's during the day and high 50's at night. How does your garden grow?

Joce, oh no, on the possible delay. I know I would be chomping at the bit. Too bad we can't send you a plate of comfort. How is Den doing?

Janet, yeah for the brined turkey. I'm sure you'll have a great supper. I need to get my supper plans laid out as well. I have to parcel out my energy. I guarantee tomorrow I'll be paying for the baking today. Olivia has her Christmas party and she is taking a box of cookies made by me. LOL She can't take credit because they know she is no baker. We drove by 15 addresses and knocked 6 off the list. I've requested more information and when they will be having open houses on the remainder. It is a sad day when our priority is not the size of the bathrooms/bedrooms, but what kind of fenced yard do we have for the dogs?

Marie, happy the "surprise" party was fun. Get some rest, dear one.

Pulled out the sirloin tip and rubbed that roast with a cajun rub and will let it marry in the frig. It will be rosemary potato night. The potatoes look as iffy as my mushrooms. Hate that when that happens.

I have requests for more photos on the house listing. Argh. I have to declutter a few rooms before I can take a proper photo. And I want sunshine, so we don't look so dim inside.

Nice on the cookie baking Tina. I was on Pinterest the last couple of days and am getting inundated with AH-mazing cookie recipes that I'd love to make. Yum on the Roast and Jim would certainly pull up a chair for that Broccoli casserole.
Hope you get some distractions Joce and a decent meal from the Hospital kitchen. :) Ditto what Michelle said re: bringing you a homemade dinner. :) (Now I read over everyones posts it looks like you have a lot of virtual cooks ready to help out!) Take good care.
Oh my goodness your Family Thai themed dinner sounded FANTASTIC Michelle. Holy Smokes! You guys outdid yourself! Cute on the Oreo Candycane cookies! They were selling the multi-coloured heirloom carrots at the Farmer's Christmas Market yesterday but they wanted $5/bag for them. :( Yours was a much better deal.Nice on getting a tree. Good luck to the Texans today during their game. I've never tried chocolate covered blueberries but I have seen them.
Enjoy watching the Football game as well Marie. :) NICE on the Jalopeno poppers and all the other yummy appy's and nice too on turkey burgers if you have any room left. :) The slide show for your FIL sounds absolutely lovely. I'd have been tearing up myself. :)
Yum on smoked turkey legs Tina. That'd be awesome. One of these days I will break down and get myself a smoker. :) It's a good priority when you are choosing a property based on the happiness of your 'family pups'. :) Yum on the roast.
Jim and I watched a very funny 'feel good' movie last night that I'd never seen before. Queen Latifah in "Last Holiday". It was on the W Network.

Baked Jalapeno Poppers Stuffed With Cream Cheese looks SO GOOD! I will be making that for the game one of these days :) For the Spring rolls I just looked at a bunch of different recipes and went from there. I sauteed a bunch of cabbage with shredded carrots, chopped celery and bean sprouts. Threw in some soy sauce and pepper. Cooked some eggs, omelet style then chopped. Filled the spring roll wrapper then fried. I was going to bake some as well, but forgot to preheat the oven. The fried one's though were so well received that the baked were not missed lol! I also made some not fried spring rolls like this
    http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Vietnamese-Fresh-Spring-Rolls/Detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=spring%20rolls&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=community%20list&soid=sr_results_p1i2
but with chicken instead of shrimp. Made my own peanut sauce :) It was all VERY good!

Tina, my mom just told me about the chocolate covered blueberries. I hadn't heard of them until just last week! Very excited to taste them :) Yes, use those potatoes and mushrooms fast! Rosemary potatoes are the best :) The garden is growing and doing it's own thing. Some of the broccoli and cauliflower are taking it's time more than usual, but it's weird weather this year so I'm guessing that's it? 70's here today as well, cool at night too. Decided to pull out 2 lbs. of ground beef. Burgers! Either on the grill or inside, depends on how we feel at the end of the day :)

Haha! "Last Holiday" is one of my favorite movies. I love it. Almost as much as Fred loves "Christmas Vacation". You know I bought him the reindeer mug to drink his egg nog from the movie and a Clark Griswold t-shirt with the fried cat/tree logo. His ugly Christmas sweater features the line from "Home Alone" 'Get out of here you filthy animal'. Yes, there are some Christmas movies that are enjoyable year after year. Very irreverent.

There are chocolate covered acai berries and chocolate covered cranberries too. Dark chocolate and fruit antioxidents abound!!

Not only does the yard have to be fenced, it can't be a chain link fence because if they can see through the fence, they will never stop barking. And the fence can't be a 4 foot high fence, we need a full height fence because I have supersprings in some doggy legs.

Marie, how lovely on the slide show. I'm sure I would be blubbering like a fool. Love your appy day. You'll have time for the cookies later. Does Rick bake cookies like his pies?

Wish me luck! I love you all to bits! HUGS)))

SP Janet! Ouch on the $5 carrots! Yeah, I would have passed on those too. I haven't seen “Last Holiday”. “4 Christmases” that came out a couple years ago is hilarious. I need to watch that one again.

Michael came home with the chocolate covered acai berries Tina. They are delish, and Bri won't try them. Why? Whatever. She's a chocolate covered cherry fan, and sticks to it.

Good luck Joce. Sending you many prayers.

Oh, fun on the acai berries. LOL on Bri not wanting to try them. I hate chocolate covered cherries and would have to pass on THEM!

Started a Christmas thread so we can keep our dishes in one place for the holiday. Post your cookies, special Christmas dishes, traditions etc.

Good afternoon all. Been decorating the house and really need to stop and take care of my laundry, lol. Got our tree yesterday. Have the lights and angel on. Will finish decorating it with the boys this evening.

Tina.......you make me want to bake cookies!!!! Our weather today is perfect for that! But alas, the pantry is bare for such needed ingredients. Planning on doing cookies next Saturday. I will have my grandson and continuing the new tradition of making cookies with Grammie for Christmas. This year will be even better as he is 5 now and able to really "do" more. Last six months or so I have propped him up on a stool in front of the stove (just like I did Cayce) and introduced him to cooking. Can never start to young......right?! Course I propped Cayce up on a stool at age two! I'll get me a professional chef out of this family one way or another! Oh, my, I just remembered I do have some frozen chocolate chip cookie dough in the freezer! Leftovers from my grandson's school fundraiser this fall. I too, then, shall bake some cookies today, lol!

Friday we are all going to the Florida Botanical Gardens to see the Christmas lights. I've never been and I here it has been spectacular! Kaiden will be in awe!

Dinner is cordon bleu with an herb white sauce of sorts. Egg noodles and trying to think of another side. Perhaps some green beans. Generally have mashed potatoes with this but just not feeling it still after Thanksgiving.

Hope all enjoy the rest of their day.

All the best to you in Kingston, Joce, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Funny how the Christmas movies (and Christmas scenes in movies) are great year after year. I love the 1951 black and white "A Christmas Carol" but I am generally on my own for watching it. Maybe tonight when the kids are studying and Jason is off doing fantasy football I can pull it out to watch.
We had a good trip to Costco earlier today and got some things lined up for the week but yuck on the weather - freezing rain first, then sleet and now lots of wet snow. It all kept freezing to the windshield as it hit and made it really hard to see anything at all.
I would totally be looking for the house based on the yard for the animals Tina, we have done that for every house since the first. I too will be in the house selling and finding a place to live mode if I get this job. Hope you find the perfect place without too much frustration and searching in the process.
The patty melts turned out great but the kids inhaled them so Jason and I ended up at Chili's while we were out for groceries. I had the Chicken Enchilada Soup and the Lettuce Wraps appetizer and now I am so full I doubt I will even want supper. Jason had jalapeno poppers and a Quesadilla Explosion salad and is napping on the couch. He claims to be watching football but in my opinion there is way too much snoring going on for any watching to be happening.
I have sheets and towels washing and drying and a load of dishes in the dishwasher so better get back to the housework so I can start the work week half organized. Hope everyone has a great evening,
    Michelle B.

Hi everyone. It is late and I just finished decorating the tree. Still have stuff all around the sun room and have to clear the LR so I can put up some Christmas decorations up there also.

Wayne is in the LR watching Elementary then C.S.I. - I am so tired of C.S.I. I decided to just sit back in the sun room and bask in the glow of the lighted tree, and check in to see if GR is still up. Yippee! It is!

Milo sounds like one cool dude. If he is catching them in the kitchen, you might look at your water pipes and stuff steel wool around the openings (or any other places they might be lurking). We have found that peanut butter works great to bait traps - we put them under the sink, in drawers, etc. before we redid the kitchen, and got quite a few. Of course there was the time I was sick with sinus infection, so Wayne set the trap in the top drawer with all my Pampered Chef goodies, and we both forgot it. Until I opened the drawer and blearily reached in only to feel cold fur on my arm. I freaked. Hollered until he came and removed dead critter. Threw everything in the DW on sanitize, disinfected the drawer twice, sprinkled peppermint oil in it, and dumped other drawers searching for evidence of mousely infestation. The new kitchen remodel has improved things - a few have wandered in thru the area behind the TV in the LR, but A.C. keeps an eagle eye out for them. I don’t use sticky traps because even a mouse should die quickly and most people flush them - drowning the poor critter. The trap usually does them in right away although if not that is Wayne’s job.

Janet, your Brined Turkey Breast sounds so-o-o-o good. I haven’t brined turkey yet but it sounds wonderful. We are still munching away on a small pepper ham and I am so sick of ham! (So what are we having for Christmas - more ham! Ah so, daughter’s request - she can take some home).

Tina, you make me want beef roast - and broccoli cheese casserole. And to bake some cookies. Of course we buy a house based on the dogs needs, what else! I’m sure you will find the perfect one - and fences can always be added or changed, and bathrooms can be added or altered. Love to watch Love it or List It, and Property Brothers, on HGTV. They do some amazing things. Chocolate covered anything / almost anything is great - well, maybe not grasshoppers or ants, but blueberries and acai berries and cherries - the list goes on.

Kimmer, I hope you enjoy your grandson’s cookie day. Good luck on mentoring a future chef!

Joce, prayers on the way. Best of luck to you. Will be looking for Den’s post.

Hi Michelle B and Michelle from TX!
