Thursday's trickle....

  • chuckieb 7 years ago
Good Morning everyone! It's a good thing Jim and I went hiking yesterday as it's raining here today (just a trickle at the moment mind you).

How'd Den make out with all that rock yesterday Joce? Did he manage to finish? Are you getting rain too?

My Ottawa Senators beat The Leafs 5-4 last night in over time. Phew. It was a very good game.

How'd your pork ribs turn out Michelle? Did you manage to re-stock the snacks in your pantry? :)

Yes Shona, Mackenzie King installed at least three large ruins on his property simply for whimsy and he also bought a few pieces from West Minster Palace in England and had them shipped over. Inside the museum there are two huge angels and a big bench that he got from England. The ones outside are from the Canadian Bank Note company, some from the old Parliament buildings, etc. That's fun you have a Full Moon Pumpkin Fest this weekend! How'd the Edmonton/Calgary game go last night?

I like and totally agree with your description of pork belly as being like a spare-rib without the bone Linda. Hands down the best pork belly I've ever had was the Pork bun at Momofuku's in NY. The steamed bun swabbed down with Hoisin sauce, laden with marinated pork belly and topped with pickles, spring onion and cucumber and then finally a shot of hot sauce. Heaven!

Your slow cooker boar sounded yummy Karen. How did it turn out? Facebook just notified me that it's your birthday today so "HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAREN!". What are you going to do to celebrate?

Sounds like you had a lovely day yesterday making broth and soup Bren! Your kitchen must have smelled wonderful! That pork loin roast looked pretty nummy too!

Hey Kimmer! Good to see you! What are 'fake' potatoes? Potato flakes in a box?

I'm packing my suitcase today and we need to run into town to do a few errands this afternoon including a Costco run. I have some Cabbage rolls and perogies down in the freezer so that's dinner. Should go through the fridge too and take care of the turkey leftovers and make sure everything else is okay since we'll be away for a few days.

Rain coming down harder now. Wishing everyone a most lovely Thursday!

    Good morning, Janet and everyone!
Happy Birthday, Karen! I hope you have a wonderful day!
Den is waiting patiently for the truck to come deliver the yard of pea stone/ gravel at the moment. He will have to wait for a couple of days before he starts putting it down b/c of the rain. He is returning the extra boxes of tiles that weren't used on the floors to HHW today and other than that I don't know what his plans are today. We watched the game last night and were delighted with the outcome!
Good luck with your errands and packing you suitcase, Janet. Cabbage rolls are perfect for such a dreary wet day!
    Hi, Kimmer!
I don't have a clue what we are having for dinner yet!
    Wishing everyone a great day!

Good Morning Everyone! Wishing you all well.

Momofuku's in NY I hear is fabulous. I think they are also famous for their cookies too. Yum on your cabbage rolls Janet. I could really go for them and maybe will make an unstuffed version soon. Hope you get all your errands done and packed. When are you leaving?

Hope it clears up enough and dries out so your DH can complete his project Joce.

Nothing much going on here. Made tuna salad for sandwiches for lunch then will leave a little earlier than usual today to take care of some errands before Kenpo class. Will then grab something to eat out after.

Hi Janet, congrats on your team winning! Edmonton beat Calgary by 3 points, surprisingly as I heard Calgary's team was suppose to be unbeatable! I didn't watch it as Pete always has basketball on. He's a huge NBA fan! Cool info on the museum and park, I love history! Oh my gosh, that pork bun from Momofuku's sounds soooo good! I could go for one right now!

Hi Joce, I hope the weather let's up soon so you can get the gravel laid. How are liking the floors so far? Hope you find something good for dinner tonight :)

HI Linda, hope you have a good day out and find something great for dinner. ;)

    Hi Kimmer! :)
    Hi Bren! :)

**~Happy Birthday Karen~** I hope you have a wonderful day today! Any plans?

Nothing planned as of yet for the day, and nothing for dinner planned either. I took some turkey sausages out of the freezer and some pork chops, but I'm not sure what I feel like at the moment? I want to make that lasagna soup again, but since we had stew yesterday I'll probably make the chops. There, I guess I decided, Lol ;) We have a severe weather warning in effect for freezing rain and snow but it doesn't say when it will start. So I will keep an eye on the weather reports and plan the day accordingly :)

Have a great day everyone! :)

Thanks for the birthday Wishes everyone!

Have not been on FB yet. My iPhone keeps dinging when some one posts on my time line...so I really have to go check on it.

Ha ha on the picture Janet. Cute.

Hope the weather clears, Joce. It rained here yesterday but the brush pile still burned to the ground, still smoldering from compacted leaves, but it is pretty well out. Glad we finally burned it!

Tuna salad sounds good, Linda. I may just copy your lead and make that for the guys.

Ugh on icky forecast Shona. Hope the bad stuff passes you by.

We are going to Matt's Steak House this evening...over priced but I told Wayne I was in the mood for an expensive steak.....he just laughed. All their steaks are expensive. Asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes are calling my name unless something on the menu catches my eye. It was either that or the new Japanese restaurant that I also LOVE! 😇

Trouble just stalked a bug that I could hardly see. It flew off before she caught it, but Fritz and Mauser both hurried over to check. Crazy beasts.

Had a fire call (medical) but it was short and since something I ate disagreed with me I stayed home. Feeling fine this morning!

That is about all the news here. Must pick the garden produce add can more tomatoes. Got about thirty pints so far plus the green tomato mincemeat. Next has to be jelly. Want to do some wine jelly for hostess gifts. Then grape, which I still intend to make eventually.

    Have a great day!

Morning! The ribs turnout out great Janet, perfectly tender and delicious :) Here is the recipe I used:
    http://www.food.com/recipe/j-mans-ribs-484626
I got partially stocked up on snacks yesterday, Sam's only carries a few of the things I needed. Going to Walmart today (ugh) so I will get the rest of my stuff then. Michael is making sloppy joe's tonight at work so he has asked me to get all the stuff he needs for it, including that canned sauce (BLECK), those guys up there will eat anything.

Hi Joce, crossing fingers the rain clears up soon so Den can get on with his project :)

Good luck on your errand running today Linda!

Chops sound good Shona, lol, I am weird about having soup or stew 2 days in a row as well, unless it's leftovers. I also don't like to have the same protein back to back either, I guess unless it's ground beef and then roast, totally different IMO haha :P

**HaPpY bIrThDaY kArEn** Hope you are having a wonderful day!!!! :) :) :)
Steak is just expensive anywhere, but that's the price to get a good steak! You are just a canning machine!!

About to do that Walmart run, then get back here and figure out what to throw together for dinner, it may just be make a sandwich really fast night. Michael is working nights so Bri's pitching lessons and Caiden't last soccer game is at the same time, so my Mom is going to take Caiden to his game (I HATE to miss the last one, but I've been to all 9 of the other one's) while I do Bri's pitching lessons. There is no way mom Mom can take over pitching lesson's, I have trouble getting up my nerves to catch her fast pitches, much less my Mom lol. I think I am going to wear knee pads this time though and maybe a face mask, too many close calls to chance it. Then my Mom will bring Caiden to me and Bri has practice until who know's what time. I hope we call it short since the girls are testing at school this week. Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Hi Joce! It's clearing up a bit here now. Supposed to be sunny tomorrow and Saturday so Den might get a window of opportunity before it rains again on Sunday.

Hi Linda! We are leaving tomorrow morning. Have fun at Kenpo and hope you have a nice meal out.

Pork chops sound good Shona. Oh goodness on freezing rain. Eeesh.

LOL @ being in the mood for an expensive steak Karen. The meal sounds fabulous and fit for a birthday celebration for sure. :) Wow, you're sure being productive with all your canning. Sounds wonderful.

Saw this link on the Food Network site yesterday and thought it was fun. "Halloween candies rated from best to worst". "Reese's Peanut Butter cups" rates as the best treat and "Halloween Candy kisses" rate as the worst. I'd have to agree with that myself. :)

And....I'm curious to know your guy's reaction to this. We have invited a friend of JIm's, his wife and their two young girls over for lunch the weekend after next. We mentioned that we were contemplating making home made bread, a soup and some chili and Jim ask if there were any food allergies or dislikes. This was their response:
"No allergies but the girls like blander food in general but love tomato and ground meat based dishes with a little pasta."
Personally I figured initially I could make a chicken noodle soup which is pretty basic and most kids like plus with the home made bread if they just wanted peanut butter and bread they'd be okay (as long as there wasn't a peanut allergy), but after seeing their response, do you think I need to actually make tomato and ground meat with a little pasta to be a good hostess or do you think that they were just a little too specific? I'm thinking the latter, but....
I'm contemplating making that Lasagna soup you guys keep talking about and keeping it really basic and seeing if that would make the passing grade. Comments welcome. :)

P.S. The wild boar turned out tender and tasty. I added pasta to it and we both liked it. Love slow cookers! I sprinkled Mediterranean Spiced Salt over it and the flavor was awesome.

Hi Karen, a steak dinner out sounds like a good way to celebrate!! Wow on all your canning and jelly making, I'm envious! Good luck with all that work and hope you have a wonderful birthday today :)

Hi Michelle, I'm the same with mixing up the proteins during the week! I always thought it was a slight bit of OCD. lol ;) Yeah, I think I'd be wearing a face mask too, can never be too careful! Sounds like a long night for you, hopefully you find something quick to eat. :)

Hi Janet, It sounds to me that they were trying to politely say--without saying it-- that their kids do not like chili. I know my kids do not like chili either, well they like it but without beans or chunks of tomato...lol ;) They probably do not want you to make something that their kid's might "waste" As that was always how I felt when taking my kids to someone else's home--if they left their plates full of food I feel bad! I bet that lasagna soup would be perfect for your little guests! And the adults would love it too! :) I used the petite cut stewed tomatoes and the kids didn't notice the chunks, with a full can of basil-tomato sauce with double the bow-tie pasta. yum :)

It looks like we have a heavy snow fall warning for overnight :S Just when the white stuff was melting away, it's coming back even worse! I'm not sure how much we will get, but some places are estimating 10 cm over night. Thankfully we are well stocked for food, and we can hunker down inside this weekend :)

Missed you there Michelle! SP! How did you make out at Walmart? Kind of fun that Michael is going to make Sloppy Joes for work, even with the canned sauce. :) Nice of your Mom to give you a hand with your crazy schedule. I think you wearing a face mask for catching is a wise idea.

You could be right Shona, although we said "Soup, bread and chili" not just 'chili'. I'll take another peek at the lasagna soup but it might very well work. Ugh on a heavy snow fall warning. Goodness you do get some nasty weather there!

Nothing worse than freezing rain Shona. It's treacherous! And now I see you are getting more snow. Better snow than the freezing rain though.

Enjoy your steak dinner tonight Karen. Can't wait to hear what you order.

Get yourself a mask to protect your face Michelle. I've been "popped" by my DH in the face when doing Kenpo and it hurts! Can't imagine what a fast pitch would feel like.

Too cute on the candy ranking link Janet. I've got so many favorites it'd be easier to tell you what I don't like. LOL!!
Kids can be picky eaters and I think the person mentioning what they did was to make it easy on you even though cooking two things doesn't necessarily make it easy. But if you can make the kids stuff ahead of time it won't be bad. Make chili for the adults and goulash for the kids and of course the bread. Goulash

I see people use "SP" at times ... what does it mean?

Alright, guess I was just getting a little uppity over the 'what the kids will eat' thing. When Benjamin was young and we'd go to someone's for dinner or the weekend, I always told people that I'd bring Benjamin some food along and not to worry. That way I knew I had on hand what Benj would eat and also I wouldn't have to bother the hosts about it.

SP means "Simultaneous posting" Linda. It happens a lot in ODD! :)

Thanks for explaining the SP thing ...

You are not being uppity. People don't do what was done years ago. Growing up if we went to someone's house we ate what was put in front of us or we didn't eat, were not aloud to complain, and that was that. I however was picky and only liked my mother's cooking then so I often went hungry and made up for it the next meal.

If cooking two meals is a bit much make the girls a frozen pizza (some brands are very good) or sandwiches.

    Good evening all.

Janet, lol, fake potatoes are any that are not fresh potatoes that I don't boil, mash or fry myself! Which includes the flakes and also these microwave potatoes that you can get now. As far as the lunch menu, I would go with either the chic noodle soup or lasagna soup. And just make some mac and cheese for the kids. It has been my experience that no matter what you have, a kid at someone else's house will not like it. My kids were bad about that which used to stress me out and I would feel bad for the host. Or.....Or.....when my youngest got his groove on in the kitchen and started cooking himself, he would critique the host's recipes. Thankfully not to their face, lol. But the ride home was always interesting. "man I would have added dill to that or NO GARLIC! who cooks with no garlic, lol. Thank God I taught him manners, lol! And peanut butter and jelly is always good!

Happy Birthday Karen! Enjoy that steak dinner!

    Hello to all.
