Tuesday and Ticks

    Good Morning Everyone.

I got an email this morning from a holistic vet I subscribe to for information (Dr. Deva Khalsa). She talked about a tick born disease called Powassan which I never heard of. Her email was lengthy but I found a link on CDC's website which has good information. Just want everyone to air on the side of caution now that it is tick season.

Yuck, what an icky topic to bring up first thing but I thought it was important.

How are you feeling today Janet? I hope another day of rest is in order.

Makes more sense that the party of 700+ people was a combination of graduates Shona. I thought it was one person's party. That's great your therapist for physio was much gentler and your experience less painful.

Hope Bri has fun at camp Michelle. My favorite brand of almond milk is Blue Diamond but I do like Silk's cashew milk too. $6 is a lot for store bought! What brand is it?

Is the heat letting up any today Joce? I don't blame you for staying indoors, I do too. How is baby Camden doing now that she is home?

I have a friend that is too addicted to Perrier's lemon sparkling water Bren. She treats herself to it at the height of summer. I'm almost too afraid to try it. I like sparkling water and think I too would love it. I wish clotheslines were allowed everywhere, even in communities there could be a community clothesline. Maybe banning the hanging of undergarments if people find them offensive but everything else should be allowed. That's great Home Depot sends someone out to repair Weber grills. We have a Weber grill and I wonder if it is covered, we bought it at Home Depot, I'll have to call.

A small church group is nice Karen. At least you get to know everyone. I have no idea what get's DH wonky at times, I too suspect it's the meds and too his brain is still adjusting and healing and I'm sure that doesn't help either.

Not much planned for today. I started cleaning last night and will finish that up after visiting with DH this afternoon (dusting and vacuuming). Need to make some phone calls today and run 2 errands at some point.
It's not raining at the moment but it's a cloud covered day and we know what that means ... rain at some point.
This mornings smoothie was almond milk, oats, banana, and raw cocoa powder. YUM!!
    Have a great day everyone!!

Good morning Linda! I despise ticks. The first time I ever saw one was when we moved to Ontario from British Columbia when I was 15. I was disgusted and my Mom thought it was amusing that I was so disgusted. She'd take every opportunity to taunt me with them. I'm sure I've told this story before but about 6 years ago? one crawled into my ear. I got up just after going to bed as this weird fluttering thing was happening in my ear and I took a Q-tip and voila....a tick. SO gross.

I'm feeling a teeny bit better thank you. But I'm still blah. My chest hurts a little less this morning and I got a bit better of a sleep last night. I still can't talk. I think one more day and I should be on the upswing.

Good luck with the vacuuming and dusting. My house needs a big cleaning from top to bottom. Jim's heading off Friday to the cottage so hopefully I'll be back in fine form by then and can get it back spit spot.

Jim has brought the car over to the garage for an oil change and then he's going to go grab a couple of groceries.

I fed my birds and squirrels and cleaned up the kitchen. Need to change the hummingbird food as it spoils quickly in hot weather.

    Have decided to make
    Chicken Satays With Peanut Sauce
for dinner this evening with edamame on the side. I may also make this Thai soup snack that Tina always used to drink when she was at work. Coconut milk, chicken broth, fish sauce, lemon grass and ginger with a dash of sriracha. I think it'll be lovely on my throat.

    Wishing everyone a great Tuesday.

Yikes on having a tick crawl in your ear. You are sooooo lucky you were able to sense it and swab it out with a qtip and God Knows What would have happened if it crawled in deeper or lodged itself. I despise them too ... along with fleas and mosquitoes.
Even if you feel better take it easy so you don't relapse. Let your body heal.
My house too needs to "big" clean which is what I started. Had to pull out the ladder to get to the top of high things and fans to dust.
The broth sounds good and good for you! especially using your own chicken broth.

    Good Morning!
Linda, I just heard of that Powassen disease a couple weeks ago! I researched it to see if it was in my Province, but I couldn't find a definitive answer. It's named after a town in Ontario, from where the virus was first detected! Your smoothie sounds awesome Linda! Good luck with errands such today :)

Oh my goodness on the tick in your ear Janet!! When I was little I had an earwig in my ear, they have freaked me out ever since (Thank goodness we don't have them here) But a tick, eeeeesh! Freaky!
Garlic is really good for the throat too, especially raw. I hope you feel better soon!

I'd better run, got to get a cortisol blood test done before 10am. So I'll check back-in soon!

    I know...right Linda? Ugh.

Good luck with your blood test Shona. There was some old TV show, Alfred Hitchcock or something that had an episode that featured an earwig that had crawled in someone's ear and eaten it's way through to the other side. LOLOLOL. Sorry. Couldn't help but mention it. I was just young when I saw it but I've remembered it ever since. We get earwigs here as well.

Interesting info on Powassan disease, Linda. It is named after a boy who died from it and was from Powassan, On. which just outside of North Bay On. where Den is originally from. It is overcast today and only going up into the mid 70's today. Camden is doing very well and is now off her blood pressure medication which is wonderful. Good luck with your errands and I hope you have a nice visit with DH today.

Yuck on the tick going into your ear, Janet! Glad you were able to get it. Good to hear you are feeling a tad bit better today and I hope you continue to feel better each day. Take it easy rest and relax.
Earwigs give me the creeps too, Shona! Yet another insect that someone was researching and got out of a lab and now they are everywhere! I hope you get good news back from your blood test.

Nothing much happening here today again. I will just be puttering around the house. We had chicken last night for dinner so tonight with probably pork tenderloin something.

    Wishing everyone a great day!

Lol at that tv show Janet! Thank goodness I didn't see that before the earwig crawled in my ear! The chicken Satay and Thai soup sounds really good :) I hope the soup helps your throat!

Sad on the boy dying from that virus Joce :( The news here was showing how the virus and other tick diseases will spread throughout the Eastern Provinces in the next 10-50 yrs. So scary! I don't know why they haven't found vaccines for these tick diseases yet!?! I didn't know the earwig escaped a lab, they sure do reproduce! The buggers would eat so many of my plants in Nanaimo, BC. Every rock we would turn over had baby earwigs, we'd try to kill them every chance we got. Here, we just have ants, fire ants, black ants, carpenter ants etc... My lawn is covered in them and they crawl up in the trees and all over my strawberries and raspberries. But I won't kill them all. The fire ants will eat ticks! :D

It's overcast and cool. We're expecting a big thunderstorm at any moment. The news said there are planes cloud seeding the skies to try and make it a rain storm and not a thunderstorm. So we'll see if the cloud seeding helps. I don't like the idea of spreading chemicals in the sky, especially if it backfires and creates more hail instead of rain! I never heard of cloud seeding until I moved to Alberta!
I feel like comfort food, so I'm going to make gnocchi in a tomato pesto sauce. I have some leftover pork chops for the big eaters. I have to go to Sophia's school for the last interview of the year at 3pm. And then my son's school between 6-7pm for High-school orientation, course selection etc..
They took eight vials of blood from me! I thought I'd be light headed but I was just fine. I guess the doc is testing me for all kinds of things. I see him next Wed. to discuss the results.
*yawn* very tired. Need some breakfast and more coffee!!

Have a great day everyone! :)

I didn't know we had fire ants in Canada, Shona. I have seen them on TV and the things they can do to power lines like make them catch on fire etc. in the States. I wonder if they are the same kind they have down there? I have been killing tent caterpillars this seems to be a bad year for them here. I have never heard of cloud seeding. I am glad your doc is doing a good blood testing on you. Better safe than sorry I guess. Enjoy your breakfast and coffee. You deserve it!

They call them fire ants here. They are mostly red coloured, some have a black end. The bites sting!! A lingering burning sting which leaves a mark. One attached itself to my ear lobe last year and wouldn't let go, Pete had to pull it off. I was pulling weeds under some trees and it must have fell from the tree and started biting. I've had a few bites around my ankle if I'm gardening in sandals. They can be itchy for several days afterwards. Not sure if it's the same species as the Southern US?

It's kind of nice that it's overcast isn't it Joce! Jim might go out and mow the back lawn since the sun isn't going to melt him today. How awesome that Camden is off her blood pressure medication. :) Enjoy your puttering. Pork tenderloin sounds good. I haven't made Pork souvlaki in a long time and that's a summer dish I always look forward to. I've heard it's a bad year for tent caterpillars but knock on wood I haven't really seen many around our property.

Wow on all the ants Shona. I didn't know we had fire ants either and I'm glad I haven't seen any myself. :) Speaking of fire things....our fireflies are out now! Love them! I have NEVER heard of cloud seeding and I sure don't like the sound of it!!! Good luck at Sophia's teacher's meeting. I never liked those. How's Colter feeling about High school?

    Lunch time.

Good afternoon and a hello to all. It's a very humid 86F right now. Chloe and I are on the porch but looks like a storm is moving in. Have had thunderstorms and heavy down pours every evening for several days. Sunday there was a really bad storm with fierce lightening. Knocked out our power for a bit. Chloe has discovered my airplants that I grow to sell here on the porch. I have a really old hutch that I use for a garden area for them and now that she is bigger she can jump up on it. I don't mind her laying there but she snitches my plants! Have to say she is quite cute as she so proudly marches across the porch with one in her mouth, lol. They are small and looks like a spider hanging out of her mouth! But no no Chloe! The cabinet purposely has no bottom doors so she loves playing hide and seek on the shelves in there too.

Glad you are feeling better Janet. I must try your Chicken Satays soon. Sounds delightful! Mine fortunately was short lived and think it was more an allergy thing. Hope your visit with hubs goes well today Linda and great info on ticks. I remember when I was young and the dogs would have them. Mom would light a match, blow out the flame and put the hot end right on the tick to make it back out of the skin. She always said it was important to get the head out rather than just plucking the body. Hope the blood work comes back good Shona. So so glad to hear Camden is doing so well and off her blood pressure meds. You go little girl! We have fire ants down here and they can be brutal. Remember years ago a toddler died because of he had encountered a nest and had so many bites by the time he was found. His little body couldn't handle it I guess.

Well, it's Tuesday so of course it is cheese night. Have a deli cuban sammach for Cayce and not sure about Benny. He said he'd be later getting home anyway.

Enjoy the rest of the day all. Ah..........we have thunder now. Must be getting closer.

I LOVE airplants Kimmer but I can't keep them alive if my life depended on it! I've tried at least three so far. They are SO cool. I can totally picture Chloe marching along with one in her mouth. My Mom would do the same trick with the ticks to get them off of our dog as well. YUM on your cheese night. Yum on the Cuban too for that matter! :)

We have fire ants in FL Shona and they are nasty little things. Yuk on an earwig in your ear. Add them to the list of bugs I despise too. Hope your blood testing comes back with good news. 8 vials sure is a lot but best it done all at once, right?

That's great to hear Camden is off her blood pressure med. Sounds like all is moving in the right direction for her. Had no idea earwigs were part of a lab research. What on earth were they researching?

I'm envious of your lightening bugs Janet!! They are my favorite and I miss them so much because we don't have them here. I love how they light up and turn the night into a magic wonderland.

That's cute Chloe steals your air plants Kimmer. I'm sure she has tons of toys too! Happy to hear you are feeling better too. Enjoy your cheese night.

Took DH to the indoor mall today. At least it's air conditioned. He bought 2 "Hawaiian" short sleeved shirts at JCP and a titanium wedding band. The band wasn't expensive and since he isn't wearing his good jewelry were he is staying I thought it was nice that he wanted a band. If it gets lost or stolen no big deal.
At the Yankee candle store they had the things you plug into the wall on sale for $3 and they had a bunny attached to it and it was really cute so I picked up 3 ... 1 for me and 2 for gifts. The scent things were $7 though but they smell nice.
Also got to enjoy a chia latte from Starbucks.
After shopping we stopped at a diner and got something to eat. I'm kinda getting a little disappointed on how cheap the place DH is staying is getting with meals. Tonights dinner was a turkey and cheese hoagie ... really?!!
