Tuesday's Turkey?

  • chuckieb 7 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! Jim and I are back home after a most lovely weekend. I had an absolute BLAST at the Jean Talon Market yesterday afternoon. After the fact, I read that it opened in 1933 and is one of the oldest Public Markets in Montreal and it's one of the largest Public Farmer's Markets in North America! It was truly impressive. I thought we had a nice Market downtown Ottawa, but it is nothing compared to this. Humbling really. LOL.

Here's a list of all the stuff I bought and I totally would have bought more if a) we didn't have to carry it around with us and b) if I'd brought more than one cooler along on the trip and c) if we didn't have to haul it all back to Ottawa. LOL.

    -gorgeous chewy baguette
    -three greek figs
    -a Tortilla press
    -a bottle of Chohula sauce
    -spicy coated peanuts
    -small basket of tomatoes
    - "Terrine Canard Piment Espelette" (Duck pate)
    -St. Agur Blue Cheese
    -Bleu Auvergne Cheese
    -a pomegranate
    -a large Duck breast
    -a bouquet of fresh thyme
    -a bunch of heirloom carrots
-2 bottles of Quebec cider (one made with Macintosh apples)
-a large bottle of Quebec craft beer

    SO much fun! :)

I took my turkey out of the freezer last night for a few hours when we got home, put it in the fridge overnight and now it's back out on the counter. It weighs 4.5 kg. /9 lbs. so it's a good size for Jim and I. Am crossing my fingers it thaws nicely so I can do it up for dinner this evening but if it doesn't then I guess I'll do it for tomorrow night.

Probably just going to hang around home today and get things sorted out after being away over the weekend. Wishing everyone a grand Tuesday!

    Good Morning Everyone!

The market sounds wonderful Janet! I miss having a good farmers market and the items you bought sound great. Enjoy them. Happy to hear you had a great weekend and I hope your turkey thaws so you can cook it. But as you said either today or tomorrow. After your first meal what plans do you have for the leftovers?

Congrats on the new car Shona! I’m laughing too that you think it’s small as I can’t imagine driving anything bigger. Hope it’s up and running soon and that you enjoy it.
    How is your burn today?

I unmolded my soap Karen and so far it looks good. Now the air will hit it and the part that is to turn darker will and I think it'll be a nice contrast. I also did a "pencil" line between the two colors (sprinkled a fine dusting of cocoa powder before laying the second layer to create a dark line) and I'm hoping once the side that darkens does you'll still be able to see it.
What are the fur kids up to today?

That’s nice that your DH can cook and made breakfast for the girls Michelle. Very cool that Bri has color options for her braces. A little bling is nice. How often is she able to change the colors?

That’s too funny that smarties in Canada are like M&Ms here in the states Joce. How was your dinner yesterday? Any recipes planned for the leftovers?

Hope your day allows you to make your turkey broth Bren. I love love love homemade turkey soup. And to think when I was growing up my mom would tie the turkey carcass to the clothes line so the birds could pick it clean then toss it.

    Good Moring Kimmer.

Have Kenpo this afternoon which should be interesting considering all last week we didn't have class. Probably will mess a bunch of stuff up but that is why we go to class. Looks like it may rain too, it's overcast and thank GOD cool (it's about 74 f). Will go out for a bite to eat later. That's it here.

Took that pic at the Market yesterday. It was cool but bright and sunny out. Perfect really.

Reading back through yesterday's posts. Yes, the Rice Krispie turkey drumsticks were a #1 hit. The girls were SO excited and then their Grandparents and their Aunt and Uncle also joined us for dinner Sunday evening so they were very complimentary (even taking pictures on their phone) LOLOL. It was worth the effort and I'm pleased. There were two other desserts. One of the girls made Chocolate Mousse and then there was a Pumpkin Pie that they purchased from Rockaberry's.
    http://www.rockaberry.ca/
Rockaberry's is a well known pie shop in Montreal and their signature is 'domed' pies, which they refer to as 'pyramids of heaven'. :) The pumpkin pie wasn't actually domed though, but it was tasty. (I'm not a huge pumpkin pie fan anyway)

Ozonol is my go-to 'hurt' cream too Shona. :) Glad to hear it isn't hurting you anymore and I hope you don't scar as well. I burned the underside of my arm once on an oven rack. It took quite a few years but it did eventually fade away. The sweet potato casserole was interesting. I'd never had it before either. And keep in mind I don't care for sweet potato nor marshmallows. LOL. But it tasted okay. The marshmallows were about the same sweetness as the potato so it didn't necessarily taste like dessert. Jim and I had contemplated buying a Murano when they first came out. I think they're neat. How fun for you! I hope you really like it and feel safe in it this winter. Your chicken dinner last night sounded wonderful.

Sounds like the girls had a marvellous time at your place Michelle. Fun @ Bri's choices for braces colour. I got pancakes for breakfast yesterday myself although they weren't Chunky Monkey pancakes. :) Mine were buttermilk pancakes with butter and maple syrup. So good!

How'd your Turkey Dinner go last night Joce? Are you having Hot Turkey sandwiches today? :) What's Den up to today during his holiday time?

Ai yi yi Karen on spinning out on the I 44. Yikes. That would freak me out as well.

Nice to see you last night Kimmer.

SP Linda! I'm pretty traditional when it comes to what I do with the turkey leftovers. For sure, for sure I'll make stock with the bones and bits and I'll also make Hot turkey sandwiches. Turkey freezes so well that I usually just put it in freezer bags and use it up in Chicken a la king or enchiladas or whatever. Is there a nice Market in the place you're moving to? SO cool on the pencil line made out of cocoa powder in the soap. Smarties are similar to M&M's but different. (I like Smarties better). I think Smarties are flatter yet have more chocolate in them and the candy shell isn't as hard as an M&M. That is hilarious that your Mom used to tie the carcass to the clothes line. I've never heard of anyone doing that. It'd sure make for a show I'm sure although if I hung it on our clothesline I'd have a lot more than birds after it that's for sure! My Mom never made broth out of the carcass either. I think she just tossed it. Have a good Kenpo class and a fun meal out. It's cool here as well this morning. 6C/32F.

Wow, that market is impressive! Great buy, lol @ getting more. I can see another trip there in your future ;) I don't really like marshmallows either, or sweet potatoes except for the occasional fried one with chipotle mayo...haha. I hope your turkey thaws in time for tonight, can it fit in the sink with lukewarm water? Maybe flip it part way. America's test kitchen did a segment on thawing whole birds and said using warm to lukewarm water helps thaw it faster without ruining the skin or texture.

Hi Linda, I hope your soap turns out beautifully. It must be nice to get the cooler weather now :)

The burn seemed to look ok yesterday, I put on the lavender oil a few times. This morning it was looking a little "crispy", so I just put on some polysporin. Hopefully it doesn't turn black, lol, it's a nice red colour still. ;) It's a 2" long stripe at the base of my thumb to the bottom of my fore finger.
We put the new car in the garage next to my van, and it looks much bigger now! It seemed so small in the driveway. It's taller than the van and has bigger tires. It's just 2 feet shorter in the rear. The back hatch is quite high up, so Roxy could not jump in it, she tried and tried, poor thing! She probably needs a running jump. The interior is all black, so I'm not sure I would want to put her in the car anyways....we might have to keep the van just for taking the dogs out in, lol ;)
I ended up making a lighter meal last night and chose to do roasted potatoes and a garden salad. We're stuffed from that so it's a good thing I didn't make dessert! Pete took the leftovers for lunch. So tonight I'll make beef stew with the homemade beef broth I made. Hopefully the broth was worth the burn, lol ;)
Gotta run the kids to school, Have a great day everyone!

Thanks Shona for the turkey thawing tip. I knew Joce and others had mentioned something about that in the past so yes, just prior to breakfast I stuck it in the sink with lukewarm water. I shall flip it. Thx. :) Awww at poor Roxy not being able to jump in the back of the Murano. :) Maybe you need to build her a ramp. :) Nice on your beef stew for tonight. It is indeed beef stew weather.

I use to think you had to use cold water to thaw the whole chicken/turkey, but I guess the warmer water is ok and won't change the texture of the meat (some scientific reason as to why). The ramp idea just reminded me that we have a set of fold up steps! I bought them for Jersey so she could get up on the bed, but she's too stubborn to use them, lol! I'll have to see if Roxy will use them, thanks for the reminder :)
I might have to wait awhile before driving the car as Pete has to wait for the coolant parts to come in. I guess the cvt transmissions in some years of the Murano had a defect but the warranty expired, that's why the previous owner brought it in to get it fixed. But it would cost more to fix it then what the car is worth (for him). Hopefully Pete can get it all worked out, the cvt transmissions are a newer thing for him. But it's good practise since most newer suv's have this type of trans. now. For the amount of hours Pete has worked on it already, I wouldn't doubt that the transmission could have cost him close to $10,000 to fix, mostly in labour cost's. No wonder he left the car there and bought a new one! Good deal for us though :)

I use cool water to thaw stuff, not warm ... not ice cold, and it works well. Warm water may start to cook the outer layer (not actually cook but don't know how else to explain it) and too may encourage the growth of bacteria more because it gets that "warm fuzzy" feeling for too long waiting for the inner depths to thaw. But you cook it so who knows.

The turkey is thawed for the most part!!! Yay! We're having Turkey dinner tonight. Very excited! :)

That's great you had fold up steps that Roxy might be able to utilize Shona. :)

Good afternoon! Sounds like you made out well Janet, love everything you got!! I love Chohula sauce, is it hard to get around you? Crossing my fingers your turkey thaws for tonight :) Good for you for at least trying the sweet potatoes, and not hating them! Oh, just read your turkey thawed, yay!

Glad your soap turned out well Linda! Lol at the turkey being tied up on the clothes line, had to laugh out loud a little bit :P

I thaw things in water Shona, especially if I take it out too late in the day and I need it for dinner. My truck’s interior is all black and I’m warning you, it is a PIA to keep clean, but I love the way it looks, so it’s worth it ;) Yum on beef stew, I almost pulled out stew meat for that this morning!

We are finally getting some rain! Perfect day for it too, I’m taking it easy today, I’m pooped from the busyness of the girls yesterday and not getting any down time between them finally leaving to me quickly making dinner to evening activities until 8:30p last night. Even though this is the perfect day for a stew, I just made soup last night, so I pulled out shrimp. Thinking of making this recipe Blackened Shrimp W Cajun Garlic Butter Recipe
With some rice pilaf. Have a great day everyone!!!

Hi Michelle! Yes, Chohula sauce isn't easily found although I was actually able to buy it in my Sobey's store the last time. I was almost out though so when I saw it at the Market I grabbed it. :) Nice that you're getting some rain. And I'm glad you're actually taking it easy today. That's not usual for you. :) Your shrimp recipe sounds wonderful for dinner.

Turkey's been in the oven for half an hour. I'm hoping to eat around 8 p.m. Potatoes are on the stove, stuffing is in the turkey, heirloom carrots peeled and in the pot to steam, and gravy is prepped. I'll cut up a fresh tomato as well. Happy, happy.

    Hi all.

Nice picture of the market decorations, Janet. I would love to go there! Yum on the turkey dinner. I thaw mine in cold water during the day and then put in the refrig overnight. It takes a couple of days before it is completely thawed. Maple syrup of pancakes is the only way to go! I do like pumpkin pie and will buy (lazy me) or maybe make one for Thanksgiving.

Linda, your soap sounds really nice, and pretty!

Shona, enjoy your new car. How great to have a mechanically inclined HB who can work wonders on / repair vehicles! Youdid the right think cooling the burn first...the healing properties of lavender were discovered when a scientist (?) or lab worker accidently burned his hands, and thrust them in a vat of lavender oil. It is good for sunburn, also, and helps itching mosquito bites.

Glad you got rain Michelle! Send some this way, we missed the latest and could use some!

We had errands today. I am not in the least bit hungry but need to figure out something.

Looking at Southwest style throws to put over the RV couch and recliners, as protection from Fritz claws if he jumps up. I love the not-on-sale one with turquoise, reds, etc. We will probably order them soon and hope they are as nice as the pictures.

Fritz is chewing a new toy. HE is happy. He had a long walk with Wayne and carried home a 4 foot long stick that he could hardly get his mouth around. He carried it about half mile, very determined.

Best scoot. Wayne is in the kitchen and I need to help figure out what to have for supper.

    See you later.

Good evening everyone. Man, it's been one busy, frustrating day.

I've been to that market, Janet, but it was many years ago. Was a great variety of food items!! What a beautiful photo of the market. I can so understand why there were photo's taken of the turkey drumsticks, such a novel idea. I imagine that your enjoying your turkey just now. I've never had sweet potatoes with marshmallows but it doesn't appeal to me.

I would love to see a photo of your soap, Linda. I have the broth in the slow cooker and will let it go overnight. My ginger isn't up yet and it's one of the first things that I look at in the morning. Oh my gosh, turkey on the clothes line, too funny!!

Your burn sound like it's a healthy colour, Shona. My son had a chemical burn a few weeks ago, nasty!! You are so fortunate that Pete can work on the vehicle, that will save many $$'s and get you a great ride.

Both recipes look great, Michelle. Yeah on the rain.

The installer was in today and I was told that I can't get a pot filler because it's on an outside wall, so disappointed. I've spent hours shopping for the darn thing which I could have avoided if the designer had told me that upfront.

We are still working on clearing MIL's house and seem to be making progress, finally. There are still a few big pieces that have to be sold or donated. She wants me to take her industrial sewing machine but I really have no space for it.

Wishing everyone a peaceful, sound sleep.

Your throws for the RV sound lovely Karen. Glad to hear Fritz has had a good day. :)

Nice on your broth Bren! I love the smell of it cooking in the house. Goodness on your son getting a chemical burn. Eeesh. Awww....sorry about the pot filler. That is disappointing, and aggravating that the Designer didn't give you a heads up. :( You get a good sleep yourself. You are most deserving!

Turkey dinner was lovely and oh so hit the spot. Turkey is all off the bone and the carcass is already in the freezer. It's been a nice day. Jim's got a fire going in the fireplace and we lit the pellet stove for the first time this season last night. Winter is on its way!
