Wednesday's Walnuts

  • chuckieb 9 years ago
    Good Morning Everyone!
It's a lovely morning despite the fact a light rain is pattering down and the skies are gray.
I don't know that we've ever had a 'nut' discussion before. I like nuts but I don't love them. I always have pecans in my pantry. They're my favourite for using in baking. I find them milder than Walnuts. I also always have pine nuts in my pantry for pesto and pasta dishes. When I was a kid at Christmas time it was tradition for my parents to buy a big bunch of nuts and have them out in the wooden 'nut bowl' with the nut crackers for people to snack on during the holidays. My favourite were Brazil nuts that I innocently called "Nigger toes" as that's what I heard others call them. Shaking head. My Dad always had a can of Planter's peanuts to dip into in the evenings and we also used to splurge at Christmas time and get the cans of Planter's mixed nuts as well.
Our Dr. always tells us to buy non-salted almonds to have on hand to snack on. We do buy Pistachios from time to time as well. And I know there's a big difference in the fat content of nuts. Googled it a bit as a refresher.
The lowest-calorie nuts per ounce are almonds, cashews and pistachios. Avoid nuts packaged or roasted in oil; instead, eat them raw or dry roasted. (Roasted nuts may have been heated in hydrogenated or omega-6 unhealthy fats, or to high temperatures that can destroy their nutrients.)
Ounce for ounce, macadamia nuts and pecans have the most calories—200 each—along with the lowest amounts of protein and the highest amounts of fats.
However, they're still good nuts: The difference between these and the lowest calorie nuts is only 40 calories an ounce. As long as you're practicing proper portion control and not downing handfuls at a time, any kind of raw, plain nut will give you a good dose of healthy fats and nutrients.
Best nuts for your heart are supposed to be walnuts and best nuts for your brain....peanuts.
I know Lori used to have a Pecan tree close by her house. I saw Hazelnut trees when I was on holidays in B.C. years ago and I remember how excited I was to see a Cashew tree (so cool!) on the Island of Aruba when Jim and I were on our Caribbean cruise.
I only tasted a roasted chestnut a few years ago for the very first time despite "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire" being one of my favourite Christmas carols. :)
And now I've started ruminating about nuts I can't stop! I remember going into Magazine/Smoke Shack stores with my Dad when I was little and they would have warmed nuts for sale. They'd be all laid out on a round tray in a heated glassed cabinet spinning around and around slowly. They were amazing.

Q: Where do peanut drivers go to fill their tanks? A: The Shell station!

Got Jim off to work and am about to go make myself a Toasted Western for my breakfast. I think it's going to be a lazy day today. Jim has requested Cabbage rolls and perogies for dinner this evening. Easy for me since I have Cabbage rolls in the freezer and we just bought a bag of Perogies on the weekend.
Watched "Blended" with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler last night. I wasn't expecting a whole lot but it was surprisingly entertaining and we got a few belly laughs from it.
    Wishing everyone a great day!

Janet, Very cool title and your reminiscing about nuts. I like nuts, but like you I don't love them either. We used to always have a bowl of nuts to crack at Christmas time as well. My favourtie nuts in those bowls were Almonds and to this day I can't stand Hazelnut anything including Nutella. I like Pecans, Cashews, Pistachios and Roasted Peanuts, however now with my fake teeth I find many nuts hard to chew and other than my Mom's Pecan Puffs. I don't cook with many things anymore with nuts. LOL My Grandmother called Brazil nuts “Nigger Toes” as well. They taste O.K. but, as a kid I always had such a hard time getting or picking them out of their hard shell. I remember Lori talking about the Pecan tree the “Robber Neighbours” had next door. She said it was the largest Pecan Tree in Sweetwater, TN and people came from miles around to pick up the nuts from that tree. I always thought it was quite amazing considering, how much we pay for pecans here!
There used to be a place downtown in Ottawa called “The Nut House”. The wonderful aroma from the roasted nuts could be smelt for way over a block from it. OMG! I just checked and it is still there!!!
Here is what they say about “Morrow's Nut House”.
Morrow's Nut House has been a fixture in downtown Ottawa for several years. You can find a wide range of nuts, chocolates, fudge and other assorted confectionery. The nuts are roasted on premises and packed in wood boxes to retain freshness. The chocolates and fudge are also handmade, using all natural ingredients and hand-dipped. It's a perfect spot to indulge a late-afternoon sugar craving, and a good piece of Ottawa tradition to boot.
Thanks so much for bringing back some of my “Nutty Memory”:) LOL I love the peanut pun:)

Thank you for all your kind wishes on our Anniversary:)
It must be a bit of a European food themed day? With you having cabbage rolls and perogies for dinner, Janet.
We have to go to Smiths Falls today and pick up our pork chops at the butcher and we have decided to pick up our dinner for tonight at a European Restaurant called “My Place”. They don't have a website but, here is a pic of their menu and some reviews. I want to try their potato dumplings and I haven't quite decided what else I will try yet. http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/242/1645256/restaurant/Ontario/My-Place-Restaurant-Smiths-Falls.
Our dinner last night was lovely. Den had the Prime Rib roast which he said was awesome! All he needed was a fork and melted in his mouth. I had planked salmon with a lovely dill and cucumber sauce with little herbed baby potatoes and assorted roasted root veggies. It was too die for! We were both too full to fit in any dessert. The Stone Cellar hasn't apparently hammered out all of their new menu totally yet. They still had their old menu and added many different specials to try. LOL Now I am trying to decide where I want to go for dinner on my BD tomorrow:)

    Wishing everyone a great day!

Ya, I'm not a big Hazelnut fan either Joce. Your Pecan Puffs rock. Can't wait 'til nearer to Christmas so I can make them again. :) LOL, that's right...I'd forgotten about Lori's robber neighbours. LOL. Weird on Morrow's Nut House. I can't seem to find a website and the links I do see don't have much information on them at all. That's an area of town I'm in a lot and I've never noticed a Nut House before. I'd love to discover it. Glad you had a lovely Anniversary. Your dinners sounded wonderful! Have a nice drive to Smiths Falls. "My Place" sounds yummy. And your birthday tomorrow! Goodness! Lots of October Birthdays!

That's a spot in Clearwater, Florida Joce. Is this one part of a chain from the States?
Yes, my young son turns 24 years old tomorrow. He sure lives far away. :(

Oops! Weird??? It says it is still on Sparks Street. I was in a very little tiny shop. They also say on Bank Street and near Dow's Lake? Sometimes they would have booths at the Ottawa EX as well. Now I don't know if it is a chain or not?
You will most likely be talking to Ben sometime tonight or tomorrow. Did you send him anything for his BD? I know it takes so long in the mail to send him anything:( LOL No doubt he will be celebrating with his friends.

    Good morning!
I'm the same with nuts too! I like peanuts, almonds and pecans. When I make Xmas thumbprint cookies I like to roll them in crushed Filberts or Pecans. And make Cherry Almond Shortbread. I do use ground almonds in some baking and crusting for chicken fingers. It's good if you're trying out gluten free or Paleo. These days with nuts banned in pretty much every school in Canada the kids do not eat them unless I sneak them into baked goods, and then I have to make sure those treats do not end up in the lunch box! Colter's best friend, and a couple kids I use to babysit, are deathly allergic to nuts so I had to stop buying them and I can't remember a time that they ever had a PB&J sandwich!
Pete had a man cold the past few days. He never gets sick, so I know it's bad when he sleeps all day! He's at work now, but I still have Sophia home. I hope she goes to school tomorrow.
Last night I made Turkey Ala King over rice with the rest of our turkey leftovers. I still have some Ham, so I think we'll finish that off tonight with some sort of potato and veg. Tomorrow I hope to make some Beef Stew in the slow cooker, and take a trip to town for some grocery's.
Mmm, perogies sounds good to me! I'll have to put those on my list, thanks for the reminder Janet! ;)
Happy Anniversary Joce, (I didn't read the last couple days yet!) Oooh, love potato dumplings with a beef gravy. I have only ever had it with German Rouladen, but that Pork Dracula looks interesting! Must be extra garlicky or something? Lol...That reminds me too, I have a box of dumplings in the cupboard so I should pick up some beef roulade! You ladies rock for ideas!! ;)
    Have a fabulous day everyone!

Ya, I noticed the locations both on Sparks St. and Banks St. as well. I'll go on a hunt for it next time I'm down town but I'm worried I won't find it. :(
We sent Benjamin a couple of Granta Magazines and a card through the post and then we transferred some money to him from both us and my Mom this morning. I sent the parcel off the end of August and it still hasn't reached him yet. :( Last I heard he didn't have any firm celebration plans but I'm sure something will occur. I miss him like hell but can't dwell on it. :(

Good Morning! I love all nuts! Just have to throw it out there that peanuts are not a nut, they are a legume, I just learned that not long ago!! If I had to pick a favorite, it would be cashew :) You got off easy tonight Janet, cabbage rolls and perogies sound yummy! Good to know “Blended” was a good movie, I'll suggest that next movie night for me and Michael :)

The Nut House sounds awesome Joce! I wish we had a place like that here. We may, I probably just need to search around a bit. The reviews for “My Place” are great! So glad you had a nice dinner out last night. Both of your plates sounded delicious!

Hi Shona! That's crazy about nuts being banned in schools? I've never heard of that! Sorry to hear about Pete getting sick, hope he makes it through the day okay. Sounds like you have done a good job of using up your Thanksgiving leftovers! I love transforming the leftover turkey and ham into new meals :)

Went to the Farmer's market today and then by the meat market to pick up bacon and chicken. Also got a couple of country ribs that I am looking forward to finding a good recipe here to cook them up with :) Michael and I are going to get out in the yard in a few to pull up all of the dead summer garden and weeds and get it ready for the Fall/Winter garden, yay! I know my allergies will kick in full gear, I hope my Allegra works. I pulled out some pork steak that I'm unsure what to do with. Gotta get moving, have a great one everybody!

Hi Shona! Wasn't all that familiar with Filberts, googled it and see it's basically another name for Hazelnuts. Cool. And you're right, I use almonds in baking a fair amount too, or in Indian food dishes. Sorry both Pete and Sophia are sick. Hope you don't get it!
Hi Michelle! You never heard of nuts being banned in schools? That surprises me a fair amount. Shona's right in that peanuts and nuts are banned from a lot of schools in Canada to the extent you can't send chocolate bars that contain nuts or like she said, baking with nuts either. Are nut allergies not as prevalent in the States as in Canada or do kids who suffer from nut allergies just not get as much attention in the States I wonder? Envy you your trip to both the Farmer's Market and the Meat Market. Yum on the country ribs. Good luck with your Yard work. When do you plant your Fall/Winter Garden again?

Howdy, folks. Don't feel well and I've been in bed. Fred is tackling the kitchen for me.
When I worked at Carlton Cards, we had a Nut House across from us, the smell of the roaster drove us insane. It smelled so good. Of course, Olivia always begged for treat money to spend there.

Cashews are my favorite to eat out of hand and we like pistachios a lot. I like baking with pecans. Walnuts in salads. I don't think I ever got into a Brazil nut successfully.
Fred would eat a jar of peanuts if allowed and we buy so much peanut butter with his love of his crazy sandwich.....you know, the abomination combination of peanut butter, mayonnaise, grape jelly and american cheese. I gagged just typing that.

Janet, I think we will pull out the stuffed cabbage from the freezer. Sounds like a yummy supper. (I tasted the filling with all that yummy bacon on it's own, so delicious). Liv will be home and she loves cabbage rolls. Gentle hug on missing Benjamin.

Joce, glad you had a great meal. I'm sure Den was in heaven from the sound of his tender Prime Rib. Have fun picking a Birthday place too. Hope you are feeling well.

Michelle, nice garden work for you today. I'm such a slug, you put me to shame. I even sent Fred to shop for me. Of course that is fraught with danger, he brings his version of what is on the list and not what I wanted. Be well.

Shona, sorry to hear Pete has a man cold and Sophia is feeling poorly. Goodness, ditto the wishes that you don't get the bug too. Turkey ala king is perfect for the leftover bird.
Rouladen does sound good. Dumplings and gravy too. Can you tell I'm hungry?

Charlie just knocked over my ice water with his big tail. He ran from the room. Time for the mop.

    Hugs all. Take care.

    We're back!
Shona, I didn't get a chance to find out about the Pork Dracula or get to try potato dumplings b/c "My Place" was closed today:( I might give them a call tomorrow and find out what their hours are etc. We were so pumped up for all their European Goodies we couldn't think of anything else we wanted for dinner. I hope both Pete and Sophia are feeling much better tomorrow. Turkey Ala King is a perfect way to use up leftover turkey.
I must remember that. I get turkeyed out very quickly:) I have been looking for that Dumpling Mix you were talking about and i still have not come across it here at all:(

Michelle, I am very surprised schools there, don't ban all nuts and things that might contain nuts! One of Laurie's daughters has a nut allergy and I am not sure if it is Rachel or Becca? I am very jealous of you being able to prepare your next garden already!

Tina, Fred actually eats a peanut butter sandwich with all that extra junk on in! GROSS ME GREEN YUCK! Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well:( Very gentle HUGS)))

We picked up our pork chops and bacon and a few other things. Dinner will now be pork chops, mashed potatoes and a veggie with applesauce on the side.

Janet we usually plant around Halloween, that's a good way to remember lol :) Bri's school just got finished selling the chocolate bars with the nuts in them and chocolate covered almonds and such.

Okay you had me gagging at Fred's sandwich as well Tina...GAAAAGGGGG!!! Hope you feel better....

Ugggh on "My Place" not being open! Don't you just hate when you get all excited about something one minute and the next minute you want to be stomping you feet. Let us know what you pick out for you B-day dinner tomorrow :)

Got all the garden completely tilled up, next on the list is to smooth it out and make the rows which will have to wait until this weekend. I decided to start trying to find the perfect Paleo pumpkin pie. I LOVE pumpkin pie and can't think of Thanksgiving without one. I have this one in the oven right now
    http://cookeatpaleo.com/paleo-pumpkin-pie/
It's almost done, but when I checked it a few minutes ago my hot pad accidentally touched and got some filling on it, I licked it off and it was good stuff :) Kids both have tumbling classes at 7 so I need to get dinner ready quick! Decided on this which has been marinating for a while:

will saute up some brussel sprouts and broccoli to go with!

Sometimes he even adds soft butter to that horrid mix. I have to leave the room when he makes it. My skin crawls.

Oh, sorry you didn't get your goodies from "My Place". There is a Polish deli by our attorney and I can never seem to coordinate our appointments with the deli hours. I would love to get some Polish mushrooms, beet salad and sauerkraut. I've got a craving for sauerkraut soup.

Change of plan on dinner. Fred said he just wants the Brunswick Stew tonight. I'll save the cabbage rolls another day. Janet, when you cook them straight from the freezer, how long do you bake them from the frozen state? I have a 13x9 and I don't want to mess up all that yummy filling. And Fred did bring home tomato soup instead of diced tomatoes this time. LOL

We got our $50.00 gift card to Red Robin in the mail today. Used my bonus points from my Visa for the gift card. Might just be my birthday dinner. Although it is stone crab season and my Daddy used to treat me to stone crabs for my birthday. I don't know if the trappers have brought in a good haul. Today is the first day of the season.

Marie, I wish Rick was within shouting distance to us. Our garage door opener jammed. It won't go up or down. Fred is so upset. I'll have to start looking for someone to fix it.
It makes the most horrid grinding noise ever.

That Deli has you written all over it Tina! :) I too have a craving for Sauerkraut soup. :) I've never cooked the cabbage rolls from frozen. I always thaw them first. Cool on the Red Robin Gift Card. And YUM on Stone Crab season. Lucky you! Ugh on the garage door troubles.

That's too bad Joce! Strange for them to be closed? I'm surprised there isn't any stores or markets that sell the dumplings near you. Maybe we have a bigger German community out West? Thanks for the spelling help on my sausage and rice stuffing, lol, I would never have noticed it! I get turkey'd out too and wasn't looking forward to sandwiches all week so I used it all in the turkey ala king instead! My Mom would make that in large batches and freeze it, I think we all preferred that over the actual turkey dinner! ;)
Oh Tina, I can't believe Fred would eat that! Reminds me of sandwiches my brother would eat when he was 8! Lol! I hope you feel better soon, get well hugs!
I envy your year round Farmers Market Michelle! Ours just closed for the season, now they hold an indoor market for crafts and handmade items instead. We do get the local Honey makers, jams/jellies, that sort of thing. If you imagine all the things the Amish and Mennonites make, we have it here!
My dog Roxy is playing with a stuffed toy pumpkin and keeps throwing it the air and landing on the keyboard, I guess she's telling me to go play with her! lol, I'd better go! Have a great night everyone!

Good evening all. I am so sorry that I have been MIA lately but there has been so much happening in my life that I just cant keep up!
I also, lost my beloved cat of 19 years, Missy. It has been hard and every day I miss her more......
My son, Michael, is graduating November 10th from his Special Ops training. This is bittersweet as I am so proud of him but on the other hand.........scared to death considering our recent current events. He will be there.........and it scares the "shit" out of me, pardon my language. This has been sooooo hard as I knew it was coming. I told him yesterday......all I can do now is pray for you.........

Hope all are doing well. Will try to catch up with threads.

    Hey all,
Becca has the nut allergy. And peanuts are not a nut. She is allergic to tree nuts. She had to opt out of the culinary week at school because the bakery is full of nuts (so the school nurse says).
I am not a huge fan of walnuts but I like pistachios, cashews and almonds.
We had tacos for dinner tonight.
Sorry to hear about your kitty Kimmer. So hard to lose a pet.
