Welcoming Wednesday.....

  • chuckieb 7 years ago
Good Morning everyone! We got some more snow overnight but Jim tells me it's going to go above 0C this afternoon so that's good. He's tackling a new project today and has to run over to the Hardware store to pick up all the supplies he ordered last week. He's installing roofing underneath our back walk out deck so that in the spring the snow that has avalanched off the metal roof onto the back deck won't drip through and threaten to flood the basement walk out which it has done in the past. I suspect I will be called on to hold things and pass things but I'd like to quickly run over to my friend's this morning and give her a quarter of the Victoria sponge cake for her and her hubby to share. I am left with a half a cake but will feed the other quarter to the crows.Even though that may appear to be a terrible waste, I do not need the calories. :)

For those on Facebook you'll have already seen my food pictures from yesterday's Afternoon tea but for those not, I'll put three below.

    I'd like to make
    Ham N Swiss Loaf
    for dinner this evening.

And I need to finalize a menu for this weekend as Jim's cousin and family from Montreal are coming. They'll leave Montreal after school is done for the day and arrive for dinner and stay through 'til Sunday afternoon. The two girls are in an Irish Dance Competition here this weekend so that'll be fun to watch.

Apart from that I'll do a teeny bit more decorating for Christmas. I'm having terrible problems with my Desktop IMac. :( It's been doing weird things for the past four days or so and this morning I am getting the white screen of death. I think I'll have to call someone. I hate computer problems with a passion.

Did you get a fire call last night Karen?

    Wishing everyone a wonderful Wednesday!

    Good morning. No fire calls!

Love your pictures. You do set a lovely table. I hate throwing food out, too. Maybe the calories disappear after 24 hours? Ha ha. Like Birthday cake has no calories, either.

Hope you have a good time with your company.

Our friend of years ago are coming over New Years. I sort of cringed but it is likely the last time sha can travel this distance. She was finally diagnosed with dementia and can not be left alone even while he does lawn work. I guess we will have to redo the living room to make it safer. She has always been argumentative so it should be interesting. She sings with a community choir....I guess one of the last things to go is music, even severe Alzheimer's patients often recall songs from their youth.

No idea what to serve. Nothing complicated....she usually alternates between complaining venison is too gamey and bragging about one of her daughter's venison roasts. Their mentally challenged son is coming, so we usually remove anything he might latch on to, since he tends to pack whatever he likes on the return trip. Last time my Bass Pro sneakers went home with them in his suitcase and they mailed them back. Before that it was a sweat shirt, a hair brush, who knows what else, so we just put anything up that has sentimental value and buy another brush...ha ha!

Fritz got to sleep on the bed last night. At 5:45 he woofed at imaginary sounds, then decided it was time to play. He was unceremoniously put in his crate until we got up.
Wayne went out to feed horses, returned Fritz after his walk because it is down to 24F and he is not a cold weather dog.

    Otherwise all well.

Hi Laurie. I think we SP'd yesterday because I didn't see your post until this morning.

    Have good day.

Hi Janet, all the High Tea edibles look wonderful, it's making me hungry! What kind of tea did you serve? Watching the Irish dancing sounds like it would be fun, enjoy the company this weekend :) I hope your computer is fixable and good luck to you guys on getting the roof up as well!

I hope Jim's idea to build that roof underneath the deck to prevent the basement from leaking works, Janet. It sounds like a good idea. The sponge cake looks SO GOOD! I am sure your friend will like it for a treat as well. It also sounds like you are going to have a fun weekend with the girls again!

Nice of you to have your friend with dementia for New Year's, Karen. It must be so hard on her family all the time. Lol Fritz will eventually get used to sleeping in the bedroom with you. Actually, I don't think he did too bad for the fist time, after all, he is still a puppy.

Hi Karen, sorry to hear about your friend and dementia. I know how hard that can be. My Grandma would have little spurts of memory but then would keep asking me what my name was, it was so sad. That's nice of you to have her over for New Years dinner.
Haha, Fritz sounds like Jersey. She's started snoring in her old age too, but she's a person dog and has to sleep with us. You might have to buy the son something he can take home with him so he won't take anything of yours ;)

I am not up to anything very interesting today. I need to wash down the kitchen cabinets and clean behind the microwave on the counter along with other things. Crumbs and things seem to radiate everywhere it seems. I still need to make that Dutch Apple pie as well. The apples stay nice and cool in the garage so I am no too worried about them as Northern Spy Apples like it quite cool. We will have ham steak with cheesy scalloped potatoes and steamed asparagus for dinner. Maybe if I get motivated I will also make the Dutch Apple Pie.

    Wishing everyone a great day!

It's -34 with the wind chill currently, but at least the sun is coming out! It's been overcast the last few days.
I have to go into the city and take Colter to his yearly Pediatrician appt. And hopefully stop off at the store and pick up some wrapping paper etc..Then I have a meeting with Sophia's teacher afterschool. So, I'm not sure what I'll do for dinner yet. Probably something quick and easy like pasta and sauce.
Pete said the main roads are clear, so I shouldn't have any problems with ice this afternoon, and with the sun it should hopefully thaw some of it. It was so cold yesterday that my windshield cracked while I was waiting at Sophia's school. I've had this little rock chip in it for over 5 yrs, then I heard this horrendous crack and saw the spider veins go all over my window! And my coffee grinder broke, making this caffeine dependent Mama not so happy! Luckily I have a Magic Bullet blender, and used that. But it's not as great. So, Pete is picking me up a Burr grinder since we saw a Cuisinart one for half price! We always said we'd get a burr grinder one day, so hopefully it lives up to it's reputation. I'll tell Pete the kids can wrap up the box for me for Christmas, but I'll need to use it now, LOL...;)
Oh and the tree is still not done! Pete bought lights, but only enough for half the tree, lol. It's been over ten years since we bought lights for it and could not remember how many we needed! Hopefully that will get done by the weekend ;)
Well, I'd better have breakfast and get ready.
Have a great day everyone! :)

Yum on the Dutch Apple pie Joce! Do you use sour cream in yours? I made an apple crisp the other day with oats, but it didn't quench my craving for pie. So that is on the agenda soon. Your dinner sounds very yummy!

Good Afternoon Everyone. I'm taking a break from packing. I have all the china and crystal stuff from the dining room packed. 9 bins! Plus I have 3 in storage that have china in them. Good Lord! Once we are settled I'm am really going to try hard to get 2 of the china sets sold. That will leave us with one and it'll be plenty. Still need to pack up the Crystal Stemware and Doo-Daddy porceleon (sp?) stuff in the entertainment center.

When we lived in NJ our deck had that roofing thing underneath it Janet to prevent rain and snow melt from hitting the patio slab underneath it and it worked very well. It would run off into a gutter and drain away from the foundation.
Nice of you to share the leftover calories, um I mean cake with your friend. And understandable to share with the crows. I share lots too with my friends of the forest.
The pictures are great and thanks for posting some here too and not just on Facebook for us non-users.
Good luck with the computer. Hope it's wonkiness is nothing and is fixed soon.

That is hard Karen entertaining a friend with dementia and a son with mental disabilities. Hope it goes easy and isn't much of a hardship. Will other people be there from your family to help keep things going smoothly?
LD sleeps with us and is pretty good most of the time but there are nights when he hears things and gets up "woofing" and then gets us up to "come help".

Oh No on your coffee grinder breaking Shona. I think it's today's priority to get a new one. LOL! and the windshield!, it must be cold.

Hi Joce. Would you like to come here ... I don't know if my days are any more interesting but there is lots to do. :)

At night I've been chilling and reading and am enjoying "A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving". I'm a little more than half thru the book and so far it's been great. And even though the ending has been hinted to I still can't figure out how it will end.

    Hi Shona, Joce, Linda!

I think our friends are coming Friday and leaving Monday. The son is a handful and very demanding that his routine / schedule control the family. He likes Wayne and will happily go out to do chores (i.e. Watching Wayne do them.) Of course he doesn't understand what is going on, which complicates life for everyone. I know his dad wants to keep her at home but I think it is looking more like she is reaching the stage where help is going to be needed just to keep her from getting hurt and such.

Thank you Karen. :) I just finished putting all the china away again and off with the tablecloth. I prefer placemats on a day to day basis. Calories disappearing after 24 hours would be AWESOME! I wish! I hope that your visit with your friend at New Year's goes wonderfully. It's very sweet of you to go ahead with it despite your misgivings. It will mean a lot to her I'm sure. I have both a friend (actually the one that was over yesterday who loves hedgehogs) and a cousin who work with dementia patients. They both are equipped with endless patience and kindness. That is amusing her son went home with your Bass Pro sneakers. LOL. Have to laugh. Is her husband coming as well?

I just served good ole Red Rose tea Shona. :) LOL @ Jersey snoring. I have a hard enough time sleeping with Jim snoring never mind if I had a second snorer in bed with me too! :)

Your dinner sounds wonderful Joce. I love scalloped potatoes and ham. And asparagus for that matter. :) Good luck with your house cleaning. Jim and I have been talking about pulling the fridge and the stove out but I keep procrastinating. Hate those jobs.

I hope Colter's appointment goes well Shona. Be safe driving. Good luck with Sophia's teacher appointment as well. You have a busy day. Oh my goodness on your windshield! I've never heard of that happening due to cold!!!! And then your coffee grinder went on the blink too. Personally I think you should grab yourself another pizza and celebrate that you made it through the day when you get home tonight! :)

Wow on all the china Linda! I'll have to go check out that book you're enjoying. Always on the look out for a good read. Mind you I've got at least three here I haven't got started on yet.

Have had a very busy day thus far and really haven't gotten a lot accomplished or at least that's how it feels. Drove over to my friend's and she was pleased with the sponge cake. Visited, drove home, and Jim wanted to go pick up his roofing but he's been dizzy the last three days especially in the morning just after he wakes up. So I didn't want him driving on his own so he hitched the trailer on the car and I drove. A couple bumps coming home but nothing big. Helped him carry all the supplies to the back yard and now it's time for lunch. Started a batch of chicken broth simmering on the stove this morning and it smells incredible.

I thought perhaps GS or DD would visit when your company was visiting Karen and help keep your guest occupied if even to watch a movie or play a board game while you're fixing dinner or lunch?

3 sets of fine china with serving ware not to mention various Lenox pieces and bowls and vases and such are just too much at this point in my life Janet ... DH came into the marriage with it and so did I. There just isn't anyplace to sell it that will give you a fair price. Even trying to sell it outright hasn't done me any good but I'll keep trying because all I'm doing with most of it is storing it.
Chicken broth sounds so good ... Does your DH suffer from Vertigo? I had a spell with it some years back and it was not fun.

All this apple pie talk has me wanting a slice ... or two. :)

I totally understand three sets of fine china and other pieces would indeed take up a lot of cupboard/storage space Linda. LOL. There is I guess too much of a good thing at times. :) It's just the past three days Jim has woken up and felt woozy. It's un-nerving for him of course. He's never had that before. No other symptoms either. Did yours go away after a week or so or did you have to go see the Dr. to treat it (which I'm threatening to make him do if it doesn't improve shortly)

Jim decided not to proceed with the deck job as he'd be working above his head which is exactly what is making him dizzy. He isn't himself and is now in front of the fire under a blanket having a nap. Poor guy.

We have accepted an invitation to spend Christmas with Jim's cousin and family (the ones that are coming to visit us here this weekend) in Montreal. The girl's love to cook so I just finished researching Kid's cookbooks and ordered them one each online. Think we'll bring a flower arrangement for our hosts. We're going to the Mother-in-law's for Christmas Eve and she's an incredible cook. Guess we'll open our presents before we go. Maybe I'll declare the 23rd Christmas at home for us and do a Turkey dinner then too. That'd be fun.

Got the Ham 'n Swiss Loaf all prepped so shall start on some Christmas cards and letters.

    Hi agAin.

Linda, daughter will probably be working and we will probably have GS with us. If he is scheduled for swimming he will just have to miss it Friday if they are here. At 12, he would not be much help....sigh! He is a special needs kid and is currently in the super self centered pre teen stage. You know, they know everything. He has discovered the fire be art of fibbing so I told him since I can't trust him to tell the truth, he has to follow my rules (which he does any how....mean ol' Grandma) in spite of what he says his mom lets him do at home. He is unaware that she and I compare notes about what he says, she told me he is making up for the two older ones, who were relatively easy to raise!

There is a site on the internet that deals in china, in particular discontinued patterns. I can not think of the the name but found it by Googling either discontinued or used china patterns, or the name on the pattern. It might give you an idea of the going price.

Janet, Wayne had vertigo for a while. I ran him to the ER once, made him go to Dr. about it. They couldn't find anything wrong, it only happened twice. I agree, get him to the Dr. it could be inner ear problems or a host of other things. But he needs to look into it.
    Flag
  • LindaLMT 7 years ago said:
Most of the vertigo problems for me have been because of compressed nerves in the neck. I had seen a fabulous chiropractor in NJ who got me straightened out as much as possible and since I have learned how not to aggravate the issue in my neck.
Sometimes inner ear problems can be the cause. If it doesn't correct itself soon DH should really begin to explore the cause which can be frustrating trying to determine what it is. I had seen numerous doctors who all summed it up to "it is all in your head, there is nothing wrong" until I found my chiropractor and also educated myself.

Banana bread came out great. I should have doubled the recipe because it doesn't make for a tall loaf (mine only came out to about 2" in a 9x5 pan), either that or I should have used a smaller loaf pan but I don't have one.

I did about half of my Christmas cards today and will do the other half tomorrow or the next day. I was able to get a decent work out at the gym in and as much as I hate it, it feels good afterwards.

Karen, I think GS is typical of 99% of kids. They are developing and expanding their boundaries and seeing the distance they can push things. It's just part of growing up.
The online place you are thinking about is probably Replacements.com and they offer pennies for a piece and I do mean pennies. I bought from them to complete my Lenox set and was stunned at the prices they offer when selling. Why several years ago I had the desire to complete the set is beyond my imagination now. Live and learn, right?

  • MissouriFarmWife 7 years ago said:
For sure the sites try to get their top dollar and buy for pennies...ha ha! But it can give you an idea what to ask, or refer people to their site and ask less. My china is Noritake Eileen, discontinued years ago. We bought a red Corelle set for the RV. No need for china there. What patterns are you selling?

Yes, GS is a typical kid in many ways. It is a good sign that he is acting more like most kids. She has done wonders with him. If he sighs that exasperated sigh when I ask him to do something one more time he will wish he hadn't. LOL!

I went to make a pumpkin apple coffee cake but am short of butter so had to postpone.banana bread sounds great.

I'm up to 25 cards after thinking I'd trimmed our old list of 40! LOL! We met up with a lot of new family members this past year through researching genealogy and voila. Too funny. :)

I can work on getting Jim to agree to go see the Dr. Karen but I can't physically make him go. LOLOL. We'll see how he feels tomorrow. I've never heard of a pumpkin apple coffee cake before.

It is possible Jim pinched nerves in his neck too Linda. Hadn't thought about that. He's always outside chopping down trees or carrying in firewood. It's totally possible.Yum on your banana bread. I should really make a loaf myself with company coming this weekend. Nice to have on hand for snacking. Good for you at the gym!

Lenox China, Liberty pattern, also locally made

Years ago the slogan was Trenton makes, the world takes ...

DH's father brought back a Noritake set from Japan when it was "occupied" when he was in the navy for his wife (DH's mother). What "occupied" means I'm not sure but the China is marked as such. I'd keep this set out of the three.

Just a quick hello here. Been crazy busy with not only holiday stuff but work and other. Just want to say, I have raised 3 boys Karen (well not quite done with one yet), and all of what you have posted about your grandson is pretty much right on as far as attitude goes these days. And the typical almost teen or just a teen thing. Trust me.........they turn out ok! I have always let my kids somewhat "express" themselves, but then would tell them how it really is, lol! Even tonight, got after Cayce for the shape his room is in. He said, well I don't mind.........well, I MIND....clean it..........now. And he did.......somewhat. But then again I go in and do my thing to make things nice and clean the way I want them, lol!

Linda, the china is Eileen, apparently made in Ireland. They show one called Aileen but that is not mine. Hmmm. When I can get on my Mac I will do more hunting. The iPad is not easy to do an extensive search. I will have to post a picture.

Gee, Kimmer, you sound like me! Daughter hated it when she didn't want to do something and I said, "I am the mother, you are the daughter, the daughter obeys the mother." She also hated "Do. Have to count!" because I counted really fast and she knew she had to be moving before I reached 2!

I did Gogle image of Noritake Ireland Eileen and the first picture was my pattern, it was on eBay. The patttern number is 2765.
