my most gossip worthy meal out

OK -- some years ago my husband and I were at a well-known Manhattan restaurant. While sitting and having drinks by their fireplace, near their entry, we observed Elton John and his now husband David and another man leaving. As they were about to depart Joan Rivers came tearing out to introduce herself and ask him if he'd say "hello" to her party, explaining they were celebrating her daughter's engagement. (Yes, this is YEARS ago.) He went back and did the gracious meet and greet. Shortly after that we were shown to our table... next to Joan and Melissa' party. My husband started to sit down in the seat which would have faced their table. I stood there and quietly hissed, "Get up and switch seats with me. You hate for me to be loud." He thought I was kidding so I had to repeat my implied threat a couple of times before he realized what was happening. Of course then he got up and we switched seats. We left there later than their party and of course by that time I knew which of my friends I could have phoned to share our tale of the evening but waited until morning... We then discussed who wore what, how their hair looked, what was ordered, etc. Beware, you never know what yenta is at the next table!

Love it. How much fun would that add to an evening meal out? Do you remember what YOU ate, or what Joan ate? Hmmm, my sister has served Beyonce and Fran Drescher at the Don, does that count? Gossip by association. A lot of the celebs who shill on HSN stay at the Don when they come to town to tape their segments. She isn't allowed to acknowledge who they are, just fix their drinks and avoid eye contact. That's is asking for the impossible from my sis. Quiet, she is not!

Oh God NYM, I sure couldn't do that. You know ole country me. Couldn't you just see me? I just love Fran but I would be like her on The Nanny and would just have to say something and I'm sure it would come out to be something stupid. hahahahaha

That was YEARS ago. Elton's suit was a doubled breasted dark striped suit. Joan wore a very snug and short off the shoulders black dress with black hosiery. Melissa wore a navy velvet suit with a Mandarin collar. Her then fiance wore a sort of loden green suit. The entrees were on their table when we were seated. The chef sent over a beautiful sort of spun sugar confection. They each had a different dessert, had a bite, and passed them around the table for all to taste. (Joan's then boyfriend and a couple of the young man's relatives were at the table, too.) Is that a decent report for eons later?

No, I do not recall what I wore and likely had risotto as I love Le Cirque's risottos. I was too busy being snoopy and counting the hours until I could call friends I knew would be entertained.

My dinner and brush with "greatness" was having dinner with Geri Jewell. Those of us growing up in the 80's will probably remember her as Blair's cousin on The Facts of Life. In just doing a search for her to make sure I'm spelling her name correctly, I found out she's currently on the HBO show, Deadwood. (very cool!) Anyway, I don't remember the year, but it was well after TFoL was primetime, and she had been asked to come give a "motivational speech" to a group of teenagers who were in drug and alcohol rehab ~ I put the above phrase in quotes because if anyone does remember her, they know she's got something to say and will say it well. My aunt was director of the rehab center, so I was invited to join them for dinner. We went to Giant City State Park Lodge for dinner, had their famous family-style chicken dinner and the only other thing I remember is that the corn kernels kept falling off her fork. The woman's got spunk!

When husband was stationed in VA years ago... I worked at the officers club... I served Louie Armstrong... does that count... I was so young... and so in AWE. I NEVER waited on anyone who was as nice as he was. And he made sure all his band members stayed in line. When he died.. I cried!
