A few years ago as part of the revitilization of downtown Millville, Winfield’s opened. I was immediately in heaven. Finally, after years of living in Cumberland County, there was a restaurant that reminded me of the fine dining establishments of my hometown Cape May. Winfield’s catered to one’s palate.

The decor is modern. One could easily place the dining hall in any east coast city. The restaurant is in the former Woolworth’s store. High Street in town surely has changed with the addition of this place.

The food has always lived up to its price. Entrees begin at $17. Gert and I have been pleased with every meal we have had here over the last five years.

Winfield’s is the place to be in Millville. Each visit we see friends and acquaintances, the mayor, local business owners, etc. Tonight was no different as co-workers of Gert’s were on hand as well as neighbors of our family. In addition, it was Third Friday, a Millville event.

Each year after we return to our classrooms, Gert and I splurge on an evening out to celebrate going back to work. It is an adult evening out, so Beetle had a sitter. Poor girl had a blast, it seems.

Last year we dined across the street at the Next Oar. Since we had not been to Winfield’s in a while, we decided to return for this special evening.

We had a 7:00 reservation and arrived a few minutes early. Our table was ready. Without a reservation, one would not have been seated last evening. April was our waitress. She shared an extensive list of additions to the menu and took our drink order. Winfield’s is a special place for me as it serves Pilsner Urquell on draught. Gert had a soft drink as the pregnant one is conscientious of the baby.

We had a pleasant time chatting. Our drinks were served and a basket of homemade bread was delivered. We ordered dinner after asking a couple questions.

The appetizers took a bit to be served. The rush on the kitchen with the 7:00 seating seems to have slowed things just a bit, but it was not an uncomfortable wait. We were hungry, so our stomachs were eager. :) Soon enough, however, Gert’s lamb chop lollipops were delivered as were my Day Boat Scallops. The lamb was perfectly pink and tasty. A mint sauce was stylishly served along with a bed of greens next to the three chops. The scallops were perfect. Cooked through, but not tough, the four sea scallops were accompanied with some cooked spinach and a brandy cream sauce. We could have dined on this alone. This appetizer is highly recommended by the both of us. Just wonderful!

Our soups were served next. I had debated about ordering a Caesar salad, which Winfield’s does well, but the special crab and asparagus soup sounded very good. I should have asked about it, however, as this was the lowpoint of the meal. Both Gert and I were surprised to see that this was not a bisque. Rather, a broth soup was delivered. It was full of crab and chopped asparagus. Gert did not care for the soup much. I thought it was tasty, but it would work better as a winter soup than here still in summer. There was nothing special about the soup and dragged after such a wonderful start to the meal.

A refill of our beverages was followed by a surprise: a house salad. Winfield’s is an a la carte establishment, so we were surprised by this course. I welcomed it as it cleansed the palate. No longer do the servers crack the pepper for the customer. There was a mill on the table and I was most pleased with the size of the crack it provided and the taste of the pepper used. Far too often mills make dust.

Back on track with our meal and with the restaurant fully hopping, our entrees were served. We both opted for specials this evening. Gert ordered the Lobster Thermidor and I had the pork tenderloin.

The lobster was gutted, the lobster combined with shrimp and crab, placed back in the shell and then cooked. The thermidor sauce was delicious. Gert filled up on this large serving. Asparagus and rice accompanied the entree.

My pork was encrusted in Cajun seasoning, grilled, and then served with a wild berry cognac sauce. The pork was perfectly prepared. The sauce was good, but just a touch fruity. Roasted potatoes and asparagus rounded out the plate. The amount of pork served was healthy. There was so much that after Gert filled up on her lobster, she gave me a claw. That was enough for me to decide to take the rest of my plate home, rather than overstuff my belly.

We enjoyed our entrees very much. We had planned on dessert, but the pregnant one was full and decided to pass. We were missing Beetle, so decided to forgo the sweets.

Our nearly two-hour dinner was most welcomed and very well received. It was good to return to Winfield’s, the place to dine in Millville.
