How to make it

  • For the sauce
  • Over medium heat, heat oil in a saucepan until hot.
  • Add all ingredients except basil.
  • cover and bring to a boil.
  • Lower heat and allow to simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Stir the basil into the sauce; season with salt and pepper.
  • For a smoother sauce, blend with an immersion blender.
  • For the filling
  • Season ground beef with salt and pepper, brown and drain.
  • In a large pot add olive oil, onions and sautee until translucent.
  • Then add garlic, red and green peppers, and cook until soft.
  • Add pasta sauce, red wine, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, sundried tomatoes, ground beef, salt and pepper to taste. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Allow to cool.
  • Mix ricotta with heavy cream. (this will make it easier to pipe in, or to spread)
  • To build lasagna start with sauce, then add a layer of noodles, sauce, black olives, cheeses,
  • (I used a pastry bag to pipe in the ricotta, much easier)
  • Repeat layering until complete.
  • Top with cheddar and mozarella cheese and fresh basil.
  • Bake on 350 for 30 to 40 minutes. Cheese will be brown on top.
