The No Recipe Beef Stew Recipe

There really was no recipe to follow. Just a general, "Mom would've done it this way" kinda dish! She would've been proud!

1 small (1 - 1 1/2 lb.) sirloin tip roast shopping list
1 (24 oz) pkg. frozen veggies for soups and stews (potatoes, celery, pearl onions and carrots) shopping list
1/2 medium onion, chopped shopping list
1/2 cup ketchup shopping list
Texas Pete (or Frank's) hot sauce, to taste (optional) shopping list
salt and pepper to taste shopping list
1 Tablespoon olive oil for browning shopping list

Cut meat into bite size cubes
Salt and pepper
Heat oil in skillet and brown meat in batches to keep the skillet hot
Place meat in a 3 quart sauce pot with enough water to cover by 2 inches
Boil on medium high heat for 15 minutes
Add additional water as needed
Reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hours
Add onions and frozen veggies, ketchup, additional salt and pepper if needed, and hot sauce the last 20 minutes of cook time
Cook until veggies are tender and potatoes are ready to fall apart
Most water will have been boiled away and stew will be a thick, rich broth
Serve with hot crusty French bread or hot buttermilk biscuits.

Thanks hezzy! I think as long as you have a fairly decent cut of meat, it's nice to be able to whip out a comforting pot of beef stew that didn't take all day!

foodinnewengland, TY, TY...the hot sauce gives a bit of a kick. I use the milder hot sauces so DH won't add a bottle of Tobasco and complain of a tummy ache the rest of the night! It's the lesser of 2 evils for him. Love the hot sauce.

Hey donman! You know, it really isn't a requirement to have a cupboard full of spices from all over the world or a fancy cut of meat or exotic veggies to make a dish such as this. My DH says it sounds too simple to be as good as it is. In a degree of difficulty this isn't even on the scale!! Thank you for your terrific comment and 5'er!
