Ingredients

How to make it

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine buttermilk, eggs and baking soda and blend well. Add next 6 ingredients and beat until smooth. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. (Any remaining batter can be used for pancakes.)
  • To assemble each sandwich, layer 1 slice ham, turkey and cheese between 2 slices of bread. Quarter sandwiches and stack 4 quarters side by side, piercing through with skewer to hold sections together.
  • Heat oil to 350 degrees. Dip each skewered sandwich into chilled batter, coating completely. Deep fry until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side; do no crowd. Drain sandwiches briefly on paper towels. Serve with a dollop of jam on the side.

This almost sounds like a deep fried grilled cheese sandwich I had once at a fair. It was outstanding!
