A different take on pesto, using roasted red peppers, nutritional yeast and garlic scapes with the traditional basil. Something I'm both willing and ABLE to eat!

Looks lovely, but what's garlic 'scapes' - once again my NZ English does not compute US...thanks!

Garlic scapes are the green shoots that the garlic plants send up as they grow. I found some at our farmer's market this weekend. You can always substitute garlic cloves for the same flavour.

This looks GREAT and as a veghead I LOVE seeing nutritional yeast thrown in. What a great way to make sometimes-naughty pesto a lot healthier and dairy free for us vegans!

Ps--yay for crushed pepper flakes. Never thought of giving my pesto a kick :)

I have been dying for red pepper pesto ever since I stopped being able to find the Knorr red-pepper-pesto-in-a-packet mix at my local stores. This looks even better, actually; I cannot wait to make it. Do you recommend any particular brands of nutritional yeast? I don't really know where to start on that. I don't have any...

RedStar is the most popular, I have my local health food store's brand though... just make sure it's nutritional yeast and not baking!! I made that mistake in the beginning... thought they were the same!
