How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  • Butter a 2 1/2 quart casserole dish
  • Cook macaroni until not quite done, about 6 minutes
  • Drain
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat
  • Blend in the flour, mustard powder, and pepper until smooth
  • Slowly stir in the milk, blending out any lumps
  • Add the cheese and stir constantly until the sauce is thick and smooth
  • Stir the drained macaroni into the cheese sauce
  • Put mixture into the prepared casserole dish
  • Sprinkle with the bread crumbs
  • Cover and bake for 20-25 minutes until thick and bubbly
