My brother-inlaw from Germany taught me how to make this recipe,it is a dish they have often with a pork roast with gravy and dumplings the size of tennis balls. He cooked us the whole meal. The cabbage dish was the perfect offset to the meal.

This was a staple at a German joint where I worked, made exactly as yours is. We however would add some jellied cranberries (from a can) they would not only give sweetness but also make it a pretty colour too.

I think my husband makes this without the caraway seeds and apples. We love it. I'm going to tell him to try this next time.

I made this for tonight and I really like it. I did add a little more sugar but my vinegar was maybe a little condensed. Love the carraway seeds.
