- Meat layer shopping list
- 1 1/2 lb. ground beef or lamb (I used beef) shopping list
- 1 lg.onion, diced shopping list
- 1 tsp. rosemary, dried shopping list
- 2 bay leaves shopping list
- 2 cloves garlic, grated shopping list
- 1/4 cup tomato paste combined with 1 1/4 cups water shopping list
- 1/4 cup white wine shopping list
- olive oil shopping list
- salt and pepper to taste shopping list
- pasta shopping list
- 1 lb. Greek #2 pasta or Bucatini (I used Bucatini) shopping list
- 2 tbls. olive oil shopping list
- 3 egg whites, beaten (save the yolks for the sauce) shopping list
- 1/2 cup Kefalotyri or parmesan cheese ( I couldn't find Kefalotyri so used a good parmigiano Reggiano) shopping list
- Sauce shopping list
- 4 cups hot milk shopping list
- 1 cup flour shopping list
- 3/4 cup cheese (again I used the parm) shopping list
- 1 stick butter shopping list
- 3 egg yolks, beaten shopping list
- 1 tsp. nutmeg, ground shopping list
- 1/2 tsp. white pepper shopping list
How to make it
- Meat
- In large skillet, add olive oil and being to medium heat
- Add onions and cook until tender
- Add ground meat, break up and cook until done
- Add rosemary, garlic, wine, tomato mixture, salt and pepper
- Bring to boil combining all ingredients
- Add bay leaves and submerge into mixture
- Reduce to simmer and add lid
- Simmer 30 minutes, stirring often
- Remove bay leaves and set aside
- Pasta
- Cook pasta according to package directions but only until al dente
- When pasta is done, drain and put back into pot
- Add olive oil and combine
- Let cool for a few minutes
- Add beaten egg whites and cheese and mix to combine
- Set aside
- Sauce
- Melt butter in large saucepan over medium heat
- Add flour slowly, whisking to combine
- Slowly add milk, whisking until combined
- Remove from heat and add nutmeg, cheese and pepper
- Whisk until completely combined
- Assemble
- Coat 2 1/2 qt. baking dish with olive oil
- Add 2/3 pasta making sure not to leave empty spaces
- Spread meat evenly over pasta
- Top with remaining pasta
- Pour sauce over pasta and evenly spread
- Bake in preheated 350 oven, uncovered
- Rest 30 minutes
