Ingredients

How to make it

  • Combine, egg, bread crumbs, shallot, 1 tsp of parsley, garlic and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl. Stir well and add the beef. Mix gently and form into 6 equal portions. Place the patties on a plate, cover with plastic wrap and place in fridge for one hour. This step isn't necessary but it does help the flavour.
  • Remove from fridge 30 minutes before starting to cook.
  • Put a small amount of oil in a heavy pan and cook onions, on low, until brown. About 10 minutes. Don't rush the onions, you want them almost caramelized.
  • Remove the onions and set aside.
  • Add a little oil to the pan and add the mushrooms.
  • Cook, stirring frequently, until mushrooms are browned. About 3-4 minutes.
  • Set aside.
  • Add a little oil to the pan and brown the patties, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a warm plate.
  • Add 2 tbs of oil and 2 tbs of butter or Earth Balance to the pan, heat until the butter is melted.
  • Add the 4 tbs of flour and stir until mixture is brown and foamy.
  • Slowly add the broth, stirring quickly, until gravy is smooth. If it's too thick add a little more beef broth.
  • Add the other tsp of parsley and the wine.
  • Taste and season with salt and pepper.
  • Return the patties and any juices to the pan, turn to coat, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Stir occasionally.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes .

I made this again with a couple of changes.Instead of beef broth i used mushroom broth. It comes in a box, i found it at the grocery store and had to try it. It gave the dish a whole new flavor in a very good way. I also added some horseradish to the meat mixture, about 1 tbsp. added a bit of a tang. I still used gluten, lactose free oatmeal and not bread crumbs. Also used gluten free flour and Earth Balance in place of butter.Delicious.

This was so good. I was a little nervous about the gravy turning out but the instructions were perfect and it turned out delicious! I have been wanting to make this for a while and I am so glad I finally did it. The meat was tender and tasty. There was plenty of gravy for mashed potatoes or noodles as well as the meat.

Yum! The whole family said 5 stars, so that's a total of 20 stars from us! The kids said it was the best patty I've ever made and the gravy is awesome! I've made Salisbury steak quite a few times but I usually put ketchup, mustard and other spices in the patty and always made a cornstarch gravy. But I will definitely make it this way for now on! more here:Salisbury Steak

Nicely done. A great recipe for Samoa. We have very good mince, at a reasonable price but real steaks are tough and imported are BLOODY dear. Great post. RJ
