Pennsylvania Dutch Applesauce Bread Recipe

Ingredients
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ cup shortening
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts

Directions
  1. Sift all dry ingredients together into bowl. Cream shortening in another bowl; add sugar ; cream well. Beat in eggs and vanilla; blend in dry ingredients alternately with applesauce. Stir in walnuts.
  2. Pour into well-greased 9 x 5 x 3" baking pan; let rise for 20 minutes. Bake in preheated 350º oven for 55 to 60 minutes. Recipe may be doubled for 2 loaves.

Mmmmm - I love applesauce bread, and it's almost apple season again...I love going to the orchards and getting fresh-made applesauce and hot cider. This will be a perfect new recipe to try! Thanks CB!

I hope you enjoy it when you do try it. It's getting to be the time of year when apples are in season so they'll be plenty around.


When I lived in DC I loved to drive up into the Amish country. There were a number of restaurants run by the Amish and private homes open for meals - you'll be hard pressed to find better home cooking. Looking forward tp trying this. = )
